Re: The Innovative Usage Thread

Has anyone for a weird reason used Arabic ت/<tā'> as an emoticon, a la ツ/<tsu> of katakana? Cause I have.

Re: Resource Request: Slavs, Proto Slavic and beyond

I have some pdfs (from Kortlandt of course  ) but I can't upload pdf attachments on this site. One of the pdf is a really good one about the development of nominal paradigms of all 3 accent classes in each stage (e.g. Late Balto-Slavic, Early Slavic etc.).

Re: Linguistic Quackery Thread, take 2

Speaking of India... Oh dear : "The word 'Indo-European', in my opinion, is mis-nomer. Does 'Indo' to the IE mean that all the IE languages have their origin in Sanskrit? Or, are the IE languages of either 'Indic' or 'European' origin, or of both? Origin of any language can/should be only in one lan...

Re: The dream thread

I had a kinda surrealist dream this morning. By chance I happened to take part in an orgy organised by the elite assholes in my school (rich and the like). They hired a hotel room, with 4 beds next to each other, each bed with one 'slutty' girl from my school. A table was placed to hand in money to ...

Re: Grammaticalization Quickie Thread

I'm trying to form verbal conjugation by attaching pronouns at the end of verbs - so conjugation marks person. This would make a regular system, but I want some irregularity as well. How do you make different classes of conjugation, and how do they arise in natlangs?

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

Two questions:

What are the typical conditions for palatalisation, labialisation, and pharyngealisation to happen?
How can stress, openness of syllables, and vowel length affect lenition to happen to a nearby stop?

Re: The Correspondence Library

What's the source on this? Same one - Proto-Batak Phonology Did you forget to put the change from Proto-Malayic to Minangkabau? Plus, did I make you mess up the ordering of the sound changes? Proto-Austronesian to Proto-Batak is supposed to be part of 11.1, since it is part of the Malayo-Polynesian...

Proto-Batak to Toba Batak (part of Southern Batak) PS: I might've missed a few things ej > e {ow, e} > o uj > {i, e} /o/ developed through 'contraction of *w and *a from proceeding or following syllable' u > o / 'in an ultima with final velar or liquid' e.g. SB gaol from PB * galuh (in SB, metathes...

It was K. A. Adelaar who did the section on Minangkabau and Malay.

Re: The Correspondence Library

Can someone find the sound changes from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian to Proto-Western-Malayo-Polynesian, and then the subsequent branches to Malayo-Sumbawan (Malayic/Malay, Sundanese, Madurese, Aceh-Chamic, Bali-Sasak-Sumbawa), Batak, Javanese and others. I tried to find them online but a lot of the pag...
