Oddly, poor/pour is the only pair I sometimes merge (as pour), despite growing up in Yorkshire. Although I'm half Scottish, which maybe explains it - my moor is like [mu:r], not like more [mɔːr]

Re: tlhIngan Hol DajatlhlaH'a'?

I was referring to what Radagast said I mean that is has a lot of redundancy in that it double marks all grammatical relations (both syntactically and morphologically), which in a natural language would very likely be unstable if spoken over time - particularly with the exotic choice of OVS order wh...

Perhaps I should have said it explicitly, but the answer to your question about worrying about consistent meanings for noun patterns, is that you don't need to think about it: make words in the parent language, apply the deletion rules, and coherent patterns to the consonant-vowel templates will app...

Someone had told me that all stems must be productive, I feel that I have to have "safet" and "nahet" be of related meaning due to the fact that they share CaCeC, so one cannot be car and the other an abstract mathmatical concept... and that stresses me out because then I have to think of the most ...

Re: tlhIngan Hol DajatlhlaH'a'?

As far as I can tell, the general consensus is that SO is preferred over OS because there's a general preference for topic-comment order - ie old info first, new info last - and S is the grammatical role most often associated with topic and so the order gets interpreted as being S first. I could buy...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

Can't think of an example, but having plain stops and some form of sonorants (eg nasals) is very common - you could justify it by a sound change from that? Maybe final sonorants devoice and disappear, or vocalise further.

This describes contour tones on monosyllables in Usila Chinantec- at least 31 and 34. This source also says that in apparent 5 level tone systems, some of the level tones always have contour realisations, as in Gaoba Dong. It mentions Trique specifically its two highest 'level' tones actually rise ...

Re: Post your conlang's phonology

the pitch differences are very small, and I'd be surprised if the contrast of a 11 tone followed by a 55 tone and a 11 tone followed by a 44 tone would be reliably perceived by listeners. Tone numbers do not describe absolute pitches. They describe pitches in the context of each other. I know that ...

My updated phonology for Proto-Oeg: .... Tones: 5 level tones; toneless words take the previous word's tone That strikes me as a little unrealistic (and possibly impossible). Re: A guide to small consonant inventories

Well there's no reason for the converse to be true - the theory is that simple simple syllable structure prevents the consonant inventory from growing by providing fewer environments (fewer clusters) for new consonant distinctions to form, so consonant inventories of any size should be stable when c...
