Re: Happy Things Thread
My team works from home on Mondays, and today I decided to stay over at my parents' (we have the Fourth off tomorrow for Independence Day), so I'm working from there. That was a really, really good decision, because it is beautiful out, and I'm working from their deck, accompanied by my mother's hen...

Re: Venting thread
[quick update on my cousin: she and her baby are safe, with relatives, and hopefully will stay that way for the foreseeable future. Still a terrible situation for her and I know she's got a long road ahead of her, but I had a chance to talk to her and she seems to be doing OK, so that's good!]

I heartily approve of Tim Horton's as a celebration for any occasion. I work with heathens who prefer Dunkin Donuts, though.

/sɪsˈhɛʔ/ I think, although I've written it significantly more than I've spoken it. I definitely stress the last syllable, but I'm not sure why.

Re: Venting thread
Apparently my cousin and her baby are in hiding from her husband. I don't have any details, but I am so scared for her right now. They live in another country, so there's literally nothing I can do for her other than pray, but I am so furious on her behalf and I just wish I could do something. I wou...

Imralu, from what you've said before, your dad's a dick; it's great that he seems to try to be improving in his old age, but I still don't think you owe him a thing. Signing a form for you is the bare minimum a parent should do. I certainly hope he continues to improve himself, but if you ever do ha...

Re: A Very Brief Explanation of the British Election
So with all this title stacking, is there any limit on this? Who confers these titles/positions, anyway? What I'm getting at is, is there anything legally stopping a person from getting themselves granted a whole passel of different titles, thus ending up with control of everything, as opposed to sp...

Re: Writing styles of genders, ages, and authors: A PhD thes
It also seems that, at least when it comes to categories like age and gender, context is important That's interesting. So, if you were to compare e.g. a forum post to a combined selection of texts, books, and newspaper articles, you'd get worse results than comparing simply forum posts alone? That ...

I really should've linked the Wikipedia article in the first post to avoid confusion! I was indeed referring to the former: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-Paci ... age_family

Indo-Pacific language family
I've recently learned of the Indo-Pacific language family theory, which proposes links between the Dravidian languages and Korean (and apparently some other languages too). Apparently, there's a large number of very similar words between Tamil and Korean that are potential cognates, and that's where...

The languages that are dying today are in that state due to past actions. Sure, the last speakers may die peaceful deaths surrounded by loved ones or whatever, but how do you think there came to be so few speakers in the first place? By being a historically small ethnic group, or being lukewarm abo...

Re: Venting thread
To be honest, I suspect there's another explanation at work: liberals are saying this is an issue, liberals baad ergo this is not a problem. I think this is a big part of it. Possibly the biggest part of it. My political views shifted a lot when I stopped assuming everything liberals did was automa...

If you want to complicate the "gravy" thing further, my Italian-American relatives in New England refer to the sauce on pasta as "gravy", which really threw me for a loop the first time I heard it.

If you're interested, there's also two other series closely linked with Percy Jackson (he's a main character in one that also includes the Roman gods--The Heroes of Olympus--but just has been mentioned so far in the new one that's still ongoing, The Trials of Apollo), and a series with Norse gods (M...

Meanwhile, I'm just wondering why the duvet is moist. EDIT: actually, here's a few more things if you find them helpful. Some of these might fall more into the editing category than the translation category, I confess. 3. "Senior" usually refers only to the last year of high school, so something wit...

Whaaaaa... there's people who pronounce the "l" in "polka"? I definitely don't, and I genuinely don't remember ever hearing someone pronounce the "l" who wasn't either being intentionally silly, a non-native English speaker/otherwise unfamiliar with the word, or made fun of for it immediately afterw...

I've been watching MasterChef Junior and it is frankly bizarre to watch Gordon Ramsay be genuinely kind and nice. Also it's pretty adorable to watch tiny children carrying around these massive mixers and blenders and such, and having to stand on stools to reach the stoves, and making way better food...
