Re: A guide to small consonant inventories
bandjalang has been on the list for months, do you not know how to use ctrl+f I am using an IPad. Assuming you're using Safari, you can start typing in the address bar, and it will have a section saying "On This Page (x matches)". If you're using Chrome, if you open the menu (the three vertical dot...

Re: The glebst of Gleb
"Non-glottal stop non-glottal fricative obstruents [p b̪ k ...] assimilate in voice to a preceding obstruent." which I'm still trying to parse. Obstruents other than /ʔ h ɦ/ assimilate in voice to a preceding obstruent. It doesn't say non-glottal stop and non-glottal fricative obstruents, though, w...

Re: The glebst of Gleb
I got this lovely vowel inventory earlier today: i i: u u: e e: o o: ɔˤɔːˤ a aː aˤ aːˤ ɑ ɑː ɑˤ ɑːˤ ɒ ɒː ɒˤ ɒːˤ It also had some lovely allophony rules such as "Nasals [m n] persistently become nasals and assimilate in place of articulation to a following non-front obstruent or nasal." (really, the n...

Re: Glossing help
I am writing my sample texts for my language in Microsoft Word. I am trying to follow the Leipzig glossing rules with regards to Rule 1: Word-by-word alignment. It's... not going well. Having alternate lines on different streams (ie: first line original language, second line gloss) is really diffic...

Re: Glossing help
Not sure what the problem is--can't you just write a morpheme, hit tab, write the next one, etc., and then do the same in the next row? I've done it in MS Word for awhile now and haven't run into issues. What's happening when you try to type something, hit tab, and write something else? Are the tabs...

Re: Calendar Conversion Program?
I wrote a Javascript converter for personal use ages ago--you put in the length of the planet's day in Earth-seconds, then the number of days in the planet's year, and you can then convert between Earth day/years and the planet's day/years. It's pretty barebones, but if you think it'd help you, let ...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
It's an odd semantic hole, now that I think about it. Ket has the same oddity: [131] Like in Russian (korova), English (cow), or German (Kuh), the female gender is taken as the default representative of the species. probably a result of the importance of cows as a source of milk? And yet the defaul...

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread
My company used "involuntary separation program" last year. The internal announcement itself was pretty blunt (there's not too many ways to interpret "[Company] intends to reduce global employment by [number] people"), but it still managed to never once use "lay off" or "fire". Somewhat humorously, ...

Re: Is This Grammatical To You?
I was talking to someone online and realised I've never heard an American say "[place] way" as a reply to "where do you live" or "where are you from". Does it occur? I don't think I'd ordinarily say it myself, but "up <place> way" or "over <place> way" or even "down <place> way" might work (you mea...
