Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Is there any chance of unconditioned s > ts, if there are other sources of s to fill in the gap?

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
How do these changes look?
ts tɬ tɕ→ s ɬ ɕ (but ts' tɬ' tɕ' preserved)
(later)
p’ k’ q’ → pf’ kx’ qχ’ → f’ x’ χ’
f' → f
Assuming an initial inventory without ejective fricatives?

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
Last semester, I took a Japanese class for the first time at my university. I've been wanting to study Japanese for about four years or so. Now, I can speak...

Ch'in Scratchpad
This one really made me scratch my ch'in... Ok, horrible puns aside, this is the first bit of actual conlanging I've posted here. For about a year or so, I've unfortunately not had that much time to spend on conlanging, and I fear I may have gotten a bit rusty. Now that I do have a bit more time, I ...

Re: Happy Things Thread
I was going to post this in the 'What are you playing' thread, but it actually seemed more appropriate here. I've been playing a lot of Breath of the Wild lately. It's the first game in, like, at least five years that I've really had fun with. I got out of gaming for a long time due to life (mental ...

How do languages stay agglutinative?
How do languages stay agglutinative for long periods of time? It seems that after just a few conditioned changes, fusional aspects would almost immediately start to creep into the language, especially if it has loose restrictions on syllable structure. Yet the indigenous languages of North America a...

Re: Venting thread
I tend to be a sentimental person generally, but I often have a strong emotional attachment to places in particular. This might be related to something else I've noticed about myself, that when consuming fiction, I usually care a great deal more about the setting(s) than the characters (In fact, if ...

1. True palatals (sometimes as allophones, usually phonemic) 2. /ð/ but no /θ/ (usually from older /z/, this is not hugely common in my conlangs, but much more so than in natlangs) 3. No consideration of sonorant hierarchy in phonotactics. 4. Either very simple syllables, or lots of initial clusters...

I recall reading somewhere that English actually has ejectives as utterance final allophones of the stops. I actually know a lot of people who do this, so I'm inclined to believe it.
