Alternatives to prepositions

Hi everybody. I feel like it would be nice to have a thread like this where we can collect what we collectively know about different ways of conveyign the information that English, as well as a lot of other european languages coveys through the usage of prepositions. That way it can be used as a sou...

Re: Proto Ge-Ngqi-Civ scratchpad

Looks nice, but there are a couple of things that I noticed: 1. Your consonant inventory is VERY regular, which leads to some weird things. A thrill invetoy of /ʙ̥ mʙ r̥ nr ʀ̥ ŋʀ/ /ʙ̥ˀ mʙˀ r̥ˀ nrˀ ʀ̥ˀ ŋʀˀ/ /ʙ̥ʰ mʙʰ r̥ʰ nrʰ ʀ̥ʰ ŋʀʰ/ is very unrealistic. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with havin...

Re: Guess the Language, anyone?

So, slon(o) must mean "elephant", an obvious loan from Russian. Correct. If anyone are interested the whole breakdown is as follows: Kəige ʒugdi-du siŋə-wə wākca-ini, cat house-DAT mouse_ACC hunt-3SG The cat hunts for mice in the house, kahi bua xuən-di-ni oloxi-wə wākca-ini, marten place top-DAT-3...

Udege? Yes! If anyone are interested the sample, taken from "A grammar of Udihe", by Nikoleava and Tolskaya, translates to: The cat hunts for mice in the house, the marten hunts for squirrels in the forest, and the tiger hunts for boars and kills men's domestic animals, horses, cows and others. It a...

Re: Guess the Language, anyone?

Is it a Biu-Mandara-language, say Buwal? Edit: Just looked it up more closely, it is probalby not Buwal as labio-velars apparently are very rare in Buwal, but I am not going to suggest something else because I have already spent way too much time on this. Edit (again): Turns out it might be Buwal a...

Re: Some questions about the moon

1. There is a reason that the moon rotates around its own axis in the same amount of time that it orbits the Earth (tidally locked). The reason is called tidal drag, and is explained better than I ever could in this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jUpX7J7ySo 2. The answer to the seco...
