Re: Bizarre Sound Changes
Some Danish dialects do some weird things with high vowels with stød. In a lot of places these changes got, or are getting fully or partially reverted though. Source is http://jyskordbog.dk : Midvestjysk + Sydfanø + Rømø (also Sydsamsø and Vesthimmerland, though with unlabialised k, and only in coda...

Could it work simply adding weight-insensitive trochaic rythmic stress, adding offglides to the long wovels in stressed positions (currently codas aren't permitted), shortening unstressed long vowels, and then have unstressed vowels harmonize to a preceeding stressed vowel in tenseness (possibly wit...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Digging around in my bookmarks I found this book: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9Pulva5QNqOZXdjOWl6T3BpSW8 Apparently if we extend the concept of tone to register, these features seem to coincide: High pitch, modal voice, unvoiced onsets, retracted tongue root (leading to lax, low vowels) vs. L...

How could on reasonably get rid of a tone-system like /V˦ V˩ V˥˩/, while still maintaining some distinction between the types? Would going to something like /V V̰ Vː/ work? If we are starting with a small vertical vowel system like /ɨ ə ɐ/, would it then be possible to have something like this? ɨ˦ ə...

I personally don't actually have too much of a problem with the interdentals: they are uncommon and do morph a bit, but they're not ridiculously rare: they have a worldwide distribution, and they're found in quite all over the place in North-America (e.g. Halkomelem, Arapaho, Tuscarora, Tanacross a...

Do ejectives ever spontaneously become affricated to increase their volume/further differentiate themselves from non-ejectives? I.e. do languages with ejectives tend to have ejective affricates with no non-ejective equivalent? I'm just curious, since I've noticed that for me, at least, /t͜s' t͜ʃ' t...

Welcome to the board. Treat yourself with some tea and pickles (I'm too lazy to go find pictures). What you got there looks quite interesting. It has a rather european feel to it, not that anyhting is wrong with that. I actually like the way you handled it. If that is what you are comfortable with, ...

Cue PM from Janko and the sudden desire to make a number system: Hybrid quinary-vigesimal system. Numbers go into the "derivational morphology" slot on nouns. The vowel inventory stands out to me. Vertical vowel systems are fun (I have a WIP project with one) and attested. The thing about your system is that it has only front vowels, and vowels ususally like to fill out space. I would expect it to quickly shift to either a Sepik style /ɨ ə a/, a more tria...

So I recently found out that some danish dialects have gone through this lovely set of changes: iː yː uː > iˀ yˀ uˀ (the developement of "stød") More vowels than just these and in almost all dialects including standard Danish. Occured via a pitch accent system, had a rather complex conditioning envi...

I, at some point, sat down and tried to work out the climate of your conworld for reasons that now escape me and assuming that the big map you posted is an equirectangular map then you probably wont have a rainforest in that area. You would probably have a humid subtropical climate, and it will prob...

Re: Currents on a planet with equatorial ocean
Seems mostly reasonable though there are a few things: Your west wind drifts are too far north and south. Assuming that the map is equirectangular they are hanging out near 70 degrees rather than their home in the forties and fifties. Unlike on earth you have plenty of space for some east wind drift...

Re: Currents on a planet with equatorial ocean
A minor addition: not ALL currents are closed loops, as far as i know. e.g. the Gulf Stream in northern Europe doesnt loop back around to the southwest. Instead, once in a while a current just slips underwater and then flows very slowly along the depths of the ocean. You are right that most of the ...

Re: Currents on a planet with equatorial ocean
There are 3 things that drive ocean currents: differences in water temperature, differences in salinity and differences in air pressure. I the last is probably the easiest to begin with but the other two creates interesting effects as well such as The Denmark Strait Cataract where warm water from th...
