Proto-Nostratic

I been hearing a lot about Proto-Nostratic lately, but to me it seems to be quite . . . wacky to say the least.

So, how credible is Proto-Nostratic ?

Is it a controversial topic like recognising Korean and/or Japanese as being an altaic language ?
