Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
Would /j→ɟ/ or /j→ʝ/ be more likely? I don't like the insertion of a /g/ phoneme where one never existed before (/ɟ/ sounds like <gy>). /j→ʝ/, definitely, but it's hardly worth noting. In Swedish at least, and probably other Scandinavian languages as well, <j> is a [ʝ] not [j], but they sound almos...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Additives
English -er isn't augmentative - I really think you're misunderstanding what it means.

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Additives
At present, Altrunians make a deity's name into a verb by adding -ia(r)- [jɑ(ɹ)] to it. For example, Taras ['tɑ.ɹɑs] becomes taiaras ['tɑ.jɑ.rɑs], meaning hunt as either a noun or a verb. Hang on, if -ia(r)- makes a verb, how is taiaras either a noun or a verb? But I like the idea of a special suff...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Additives
The names aren't for the structure: there isn't an 'augmentative structure' that's language independent. Superlatives and augmentatives are different things. Superlatives are a degree of comparison - they give the best or strongest example of something. But they can be marked in different ways, even...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Additives
I think your confusing two types of morphology, derivational and inflectional. Derivational morphology takes one base word, like 'build' or 'child', and turns it into another word, like 'builder' or 'childhood'. But these are still lemmas (i.e. they have a dictionary entry). Inflectional morphology ...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
/ð/ ad /x/ should really be with the fricatives, and I would put them in (normal brackets) if they only appear as allophones, but it looks fine otherwise. I would have expected /θ/ to have been the allophone of /t/, although /ð/ isn't impossible - weirder things happen all the time in language. I'm ...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
Just to make sure I understand correctly, I should record the voiceless phoneme before its voiced counterpart (e.g., /p b/) when transcribing the IPA for my conlangs, if both sounds exist. Yeah, generally speaking. I don't know why that's the convention, but it is. As for the IPA, we are on Earth, ...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
Firstly, [k] and [g] are no more different than [p] and but its nice that it's not completely symmetrical. But more importantly, if the cultures have had no contact with Earth, how would they have come up with those characters? Also, all scripts should have a certain 'aesthetic' for lack of a better...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
I feel like here might be a more appropriate place to continue than the Romanisation Challenge. Are [p] and distinct phonemes /p/ and /b/, or are they allophones of one underlying /p/? Also, what is up with those clusters, because you would need a very good reason to count them as one phoneme. And w...

Re: Gartul, p.4- Alphabet
So your phonology is: /m n ɳ ɲ/ /p b t d tʃ dʒ ɟ k g/ /f v s z ʃ χ h/ /w r l j/ /i e ə a u/ /ia ai ue uə ua au/ (I'm interpreting /uə/ how you wrote it, rather than /ø/ or /œ/ like you described) but this doesn't really match up to the alphabet - you miss out sounds like /ɳ/ and /ɲ/, and add letters...

Re: Singing pronunciation in different languages
I don't know if this is to do with my growing up in Albania and being surrounded by (mostly mid-west) American English rather than my native British English, but when I'm singing songs that I don't know were written by someone with a British accent, I'll suddenly get the cot-caught merger and dark l...

Re: Gartul, p.3- Phonology
I’d add k, but why c? C seems unnecessary. If you have voicing distinctions in /p/vs/b/, /t/vs/d/ and /k/vs/g/ etc. , it kinda makes sense to have /c/vs/ɟ/ as well. Again, its not necessary, and it would give the phonology an interesting flavour if it wasn't there. That would leave your consonant i...

I don’t entirely know what you mean by ‘realistic.’ I tried to model it after the English vowel system, just variants on a, e, I, o, and u. Simply put, this would very much surprise me if I saw it in a natural language: /i/ and /ɪ/ sound very similar, so, to make it easier to tell words apart, /ɪ/ ...

Re: Romanization challenge thread
You've got two sounds that alternate between velar and palatal realizations and you don't actually say what determines which realization is used. (I'm guessing from your sample passage that velars front to palatals before a front vowel, but you never confirmed this.) Also, you don't say what the na...

Slovene Resources
Does anybody know of any good Slovene resources? I'm going in the summer and, as any linguist would, have decided to learn at least some of the language.
