Re: Creating a continent

The blue arrows represent water flow (chosen arbitrarily); the left one carries warm tropical water northwards, which is why the green line extends over a few small nearby islands - the warm water basically negates any chill from their northward position. The same thing happens on the right side, t...

Re: Creating a continent

For the scale, pretty much anything is reasonable/justifiable. Pretty much the only features that get changed by scaling a landmass that much are the climate, so heres an example climate I drew. *Note everything beyond this point is PURELY creative and NOT something you *must* do; I've included it t...

Re: Looking for a certain IPA keyboard

I know you asked for a certain keyboard, but just in case you cant find it and need a replacement, I really like this one.

Re: Creating a continent

It's a different planet, but identical to Earth other than the different arrangement and amount of continents. That map of the winds is very useful. What's the latitude of the line that cuts through Scandinavia? I believe (dont quote me on this) that its around roughly 60 degrees, but that's purely...

Re: Creating a continent

The side of the mountain facing into the wind is green and lush, and the other side is a desert, and basically continues until theres a way for moisture to get into the air again. Am I right in thinking that westerly winds are more common in this situation? If you're placing it as a new continent o...

Re: Creating a continent

If its only for your own personal reference, drawing it freehand can work pretty well - just sketch some random shapes until you find one you like, and scale it up with jagged coastlines. If you're trying to keep it digital, I would go with option #1; there's nothing wrong with scaling something up ...

Re: Introducing Unthahian

Nope it's a descendent of Sumerian. I have a couple posts in the works soon. I more or less am ready to post a section on nouns and then will post on phonology and the sound changes. I have some updates to make on my previous posts as well. o_O wow kudos to you for choosing to work with something t...

Re: Introducing Unthahian

Looks really cool, definitely looking forward to future posts! I like the flavor of the language ^ Seconded - the phonology flows together really well. Iru-ī-qarawa contains two loans from Persian, the connector ī and the word qarak which is from the middle persian kadag meaning "house". Tari(k) is ...

Re: Noun incorporation and applicative voice question

I think this thread could be a good candidate for moving to C&C so that it will survive longer. I dont know what the pruning time is in this forum, but it looks like it's about 45 days judging by the timestamp of the oldest thread in the forum. edit: either I misread the original forum or a moderat...

Re: Noun incorporation and applicative voice question

@soap & @nmnmv123: of course sound changes! I thought that went without saying. When I said reduced/abbreviated, I meant phonologically reduced. And if one looks at an athabaskan grammar, they sometimes show a grand chart of all the verbal slots, showing all sorts of interdependencies and variation...

Re: Noun incorporation and applicative voice question

Vowel harmony can be phonemic. Do you know of any languages that have phonemic harmony? I've never heard of it, but I can see how some triggering morpheme in a binary system (ex, marking past or present) would simply get deleted, since the harmony alone is enough to get the information (though this...

Re: Noun incorporation and applicative voice question

Hardcore fusion (looking at you German ablaut and Semitic triconsonantal roots) terrifies me, especially in the context of a 10+ morpheme word Mwahahaha! Ablaut, aka vowel harmony, happens in a many of the PS American languages. If you want polysynthesism, you must pay the price, mortal, or go back...

Re: Noun incorporation and applicative voice question

As for the sound changes, thanks to everyone that brought it up - another point I'll be adding. For the reduction, I'll be using a searchable version of the index diachronica , along with some syllable merging and (TBD) vowel changes (if any future readers need this for reference) Slots are really t...

Re: Noun incorporation and applicative voice question

Nice to meet you. Im not that knowledgeable about linguistics; in fact Im mostly interested in this thread because I have the same question about my own primary conlang, and will pay attention to the answers to see if I can apply them as well. So I dont have much to add here. Lol so we're basically...

Re: Noun incorporation and applicative voice question

Incidentally, nmnmv123, does your language have pronouns? If not, have you thought up a method to distinguish four-way pair sets like "I am a teacher" vs "my teacher" vs "Im teaching" vs "my teaching(s)" ? Not yet, though I'll probably add them later (specialized for one noun in the sentence, ex on...

Noun incorporation and applicative voice question

First of all, before I even get to the question, just want to apologize for any formatting/other weird issues, or if I posted this in the wrong place - I'm new to the forum Relevant background information: nyokSol /nʲokʃol/ is a head-marking polysynthetic language with noun incorporation and VSO wor...
