Re: Naming a Fantasy World
And sanskacharu, it would be a good idea to come up with some naming conventions. If it weren't for the fact that this is a proto language and they probably wouldn't have that. A proto-language is still a full language spoken and used by a group of people, and I don't know of any group that does no...

Fascinating! I'll take a look at what's been done so far and see if I have anything to add after I finish my classwork for the day.

Re: Protolang Reconstruction Challenge (Akana)
To clarify: is this a project to reconstruct a protolanguage that has not already been developed, or are there "answers" already?
I think it looks very interesting. I might give it a go, though how fast I'd make progress given my schedule remains to be seen.

Re: Naming a Fantasy World
Generally speaking, thinking of the naming conventions your conlang already has is a good start. For instance, my Ayakadiya speakers (aya) enjoy naming customs that are effectively whole sentences or phrases (if short ones) smooshed into one word. Their word for 'world' is mašaaḥkaana , which litera...

Re: Ayakadiya
I'm super stupidly stuck on what to write for my next post, and considering that I got slammed with homework, I might not have time to write anything more significant until the weekend. In the meantime, have a glimpse into one of the notebook pages that I scribbled on back when I was designing Ayaka...

This will certainly be a challenge to write. I do feel like I definitely have certain preferences, though... Phonology Minimalist phoneme inventories. I'm a minimalist myself, and I always end up trimming rather than adding. Lack of voicing contrast in plosives and fricatives. Usually the default be...

All I can think of for this is dominate [dɑwmɪnejt] and dominant [dɑwmɪnænt]... no schwa there for me. "Dominate" cannot possibly be considered an adjective for me, so part of me had no idea what you guys were on about for a while. Some I can think of from the top of my head: - subordinate - coordin...

Phonology
Finally, something gets done. Phonology I would enjoy listing these by the type of sound change they are... but they're also ordered rules, under rule-based SPE phonology. I've briefly considered doing an OT writeup but tossed the idea last semester because of my thesis -- maybe I'll come back to it...

Re: Post Your Conlang's Inspiration
This looks like fun... Though, Ukumusi and Mupuasa don't truly have much in the way of inspiration, because of how I designed and developed them. I'll leave them out for now. Ayakadiya has a fairly straightforward inspiration in Sumerian (what little we know of it), at least for the sound system and...

Aah! This is so lovely! Am I correct that Sawaan is partly inspired by Austronesian languages? I like how exhaustive your post is, while still giving a short, sketch-overview of the language. I do have one question: You have a number of infixes that I see, but I can't determine the method you use fo...

Re: kårroť scratchpad - Necroes welcome!
There is no fixed word order. The topic is marked before nouns with the ti particle. Verbal negation is done by a sentence-final ne particle. SOV – imperative OSV – declarative SVO – interrogative prohibitive is negated imperative This is a really interesting word order system. I think I like it. I...

I'm leaving the phoneme inventory and the phonology until I figure out how to make those pretty pretty tables I see in the phonology thread. Anyway. Re: Proto-Haethic of the Haethic Language Family
Suffixation is really just the most common form of affixation you'll find, cross-linguistically. It's not just Indo-European that's fond of it, though it is fair to feel sick of them. Infixes are fun, and not terribly out there, so if the rest of the language rests on prefixes and infixes then you'r...

I'm usually pretty forgiving when I judge what can and can't be a verb, but verbing 'wanderlust' just strikes me as... intensely strange. I feel like I'd do a double take if I heard it in conversation.

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Doesn't compile for me. Law is [lɔw], Drawer (as in a chest of drawers) is [dʒɹoɹ], perhaps [dʒɹowɹ]. They didn't even get the vowels to match... I do appreciate the slogan itself, though.
