JAL
Something like:

rat trap: [ɹʷæ̈t̚ tɕʷʰɹʷæ̈ɓ]
rat rap: [ɹʷæ̈ʔ ɹʷæ̈ɓ]

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread

Looks like I tend to elide the /t/ in that consonant cluster: [tʰe̞ɪ̯s(t)s gʊd̚] [tʰe̞ɪ̯s(t)s bæːd̚] [tʰe̞ɪ̯s(t)s fɐ̃ni] Looks like you have the bad-lad split. That's pretty universal in Australian English apparently. You're Australian and you have [e̞ɪ̯] rather than [æɪ̯] for the "FACE" vowel? I'm...

It's the /n/ that's sometimes lost, not the /l/.

By the time /ð/ was lost, cloth could have already had its vowel shortened.

Re: More English vowels

"wash" historically had the same vowel as in "crash" and "smash". Then vowel rounding occurred causing the TRAP vowel to become rounded after "w" hence the present pronunciations of "wander", "wasp", "wash", "want", "wand", "watch" etc. The rounding didn't occur before velar consonants as in "wagon...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread

Is “says” /sɛz/ or /seɪz/? I've been thinking it's exclusively /sɛz/, but now I'm hearing some people, with otherwise not abnormal accents, pronounce it /seɪz/. /seɪz/, or more accurately, [sæɪz], is a feature that is quite prominent in New Zealand English. Is “says” /sɛz/ or /seɪz/? I've been thin...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread

Does anyone else pronounce "seal" (as in the animal) and "seal" (as in the stamp) differently? I pronounce the former [si.əw] and the later [sew]~[se.əw]. As far as I've checked, all other other historic /-iːl/ words pattern to the latter (e.g. real [ɹeəw] wholemeal [hɔwˈmeəw]). That's weird. Both ...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

Hmm. Apparently, <solenoid> is /ˈsoʊ.lə.nɔɪd/, not /ˈsɔl.ə.nɔɪd/. Is /ˈsɔl.ə.nɔɪd/ the pronunciation you would expect based on some spelling pattern, or do you not know why you expected it? I forget, what type of accent do you have and which vowel does /ɔ/ mean to you (I'd guess THOUGHT, but I know...

I don't think native Tamil words allow initial r-, so a variant with initial e- added would make sense.

Some more details about vowel mergers, etc. would be appreciated. It doesn't have to be as complicated as this: /æl/ no words end with this or have this before a consonant. /el/ -> /al/ -> /aw/ belt: [bɐwt] (rhymes with bout ) /il/ -> /eɘw/ feel: [fe.ɘw] (see corresponding words with historic r) /øl...
