Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea
Yeah, me too. Actually, I think in French it's always /najk/, even in adverts.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread
I have mixed feelings about the other guitarist in my band. I'm happy to have a second guitar, but... I don't think he's very good. I'm not speaking about technique: heck, I have limited technical abilities myself. The guy is by no means a beginner: he's in his forties, and owns about thirty guitars...

Re: French politics thread
I can't even tell who's supposed to be the opposition party. The last election seems to have broken the traditional two-party system. When there are only two major parties, it's obvious who is the "opposition party": it's the major one that's not in power. Now nobody knows who's a "major" or "minor...

I've been building and repairing guitar pedals. I fixed my father's old fuzz and wah pedal from the 70's. What it looks like: https://image.noelshack.com/minis/2018/17/5/1524782382-dsci0461.png http://files.effectsdatabase.com/gear/pics/electronicsounds_wahfuzzswell_001.jpg (The second one isn't the...

Re: What do you call...
IANANS, but here are my impressions anyway. There's a kind of literary trope where authors avoid giving the referent for awhile, sometimes several sentences into their piece. That makes some of these more acceptable to me. A-D don't work partly because they're so mundane they don't trigger this trop...

For a long time, I thought fuzz had the FOOT vowel.

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Interestingly enough, while I mostly pronounce it the Spanish way, I think I pronounce the first vowel in leche as /ɛ/, at least in context of that phrase. That's weird--I know perfectly well it's supposed to be /e/, and I learned about the food from Spanish speakers. Meh, Spanish doesn't distingui...

Re: French politics thread
Yeah, I've watched with despair my country turn into a semi-dictatorship with a few, seemingly unimportant changes in the election system. The switch in 2000 from a 7-year term to a 5-year term sealed it down: it ended up strengthening the President's power considerably. The legislative election sho...

Re: French politics thread
As usual, words are ambiguous. For instance, François-René Rideau (a friend of a friend) call himself a "libéral", and his positions fit what you'd call "libertarian" (anti-government, against government-supported monopolies, pro-free software, interested in cryptocurrencies...).

Re: French politics thread
Think "neoliberalism", which is about deregulation, lower taxes, and corporatism. It's a concept often associated with conservatives (from Reagan and Thatcher to Dubya Bush). This is what the French now understand by "libéralisme". Yes, both of these words are hopelessly vague. I know that. By the w...

Faites-le le plus souvent faites-le le soir du 23 décembre Faites-les les lire I don't think I do anything special here. The second le will often be reduced to /l/ with the schwa elided, if the following word starts with a consonant that isn't /l/. Also, there will often be an intonation break betw...

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread
Yesterday, a student saw me through an open window, and said to her friends: /temajaki, temajaki/. No, this isn't the name of a Japanese dish. This is slangy French for "lookit who's there". /tema/ is Verlan for matez . In my idiolect, mater is a colloquial word for "to gaze, to ogle"; but teenagers...

Je suis heureux que tu aies reçu un peu d'amour de la mère de ton ami au moins. In writing, contractions such as y'a , qu'aient for qui aient , and t'aies for tu aies are ve...

Re: Classical Composers
Some belated thoughts on the conversation we had a month ago... I think you have to bear in mind that classical music isn't really very intellectual - it's much more to do with raw emotion. You don't have to analyse "what things mean" or where the modulations are - you don't have to be "confused". Y...

Re: Classical Composers
Uh, yes, that's what I was trying to say: that Pete Townshend was pretty clear about the song's main source of inspiration. The song title is clearly a shout-out, and is unrelated to the actual lyrics. (And "Baba" refers to Meher Baba, his spiritual inspiration.) By the way, I prefer the live versio...

Re: Are the h and ng sounds allophones?
The goat/goal split may also play a part: some people have the goal allophone before intervocalic /l/, as in holy , but not in slowly because of a morpheme boundary. I don't think anyone ever suggested seriously that [h] and [ŋ] are allophones; it seems to me a reductio ad absurdum to show that comp...

Île-de-France has been covered in snow for two days. As a result, all buses have been canceled. Unfortunately, I rely on them to go to work... I had to leave home at 5AM to get to my high school on time. And only six students came.
Aaand it looks like I will have to do the same tomorrow morning.

Leia Chewie I'm asking about these because of the hiatuses appearing in these words. I would pronounce them (in English) /ˈleɪ ə/ and /ˈtʃuː i/. Neither word is phonetically unusual. Both FACE /eɪ/ and GOOSE /uː/ are free vowels, and they're often followed by another vowel in the same word. Compare...

My CD collection is just sorted alphabetically by artist name, and chronologically within the same artist. Oh, this is how I do it too. I said I added tags to the spreadsheet; I haven't changed the physical layout. I'm considering trying to make a database instead of a spreadsheet, incidentally, bu...
