Would [y ɔ] be believable transcriptions of [ᴇʋ ɑʋ] as vowels, or would [ᴇʋ ɑʋ] need different transcriptions?
Is [m n→ɴ] adjacent to back vowels a likely assimilation?
Are [pʃ bʒ] better described as bilabial-postalveolar ([p̱ʃ ḇʒ]) or labiodental-postalveolar ([p̪ʃ b̪ʒ])?

Re: Aʻatun Scratchpad: Grammar
Immortal, which is nanfían ([ɴɑŋ'fi.ɑɴ]) in Aʻatun, can be either a noun or an adjective in English. If nanfían has that same interaction (not sure it will), do I need an adjectival suffix, such as -(o)xí, for it?

I love that you've reunified Korea and trimmed China back to its rightful territory.
One nitpick, though, I think you accidentally double-posted this topic. Don't worry, I know it's because of internal server errors. I've been getting a bunch of them lately as well.

Aʻatun Scratchpad: Grammar
I'm rehashing this topic somewhat. However, I want a fresh start to reflect the broader scope of the topic from the start. The old topic closed with me mentioning the adjectival suffix <-khi>, which is now rendered as <-(o)xi>, and giving examples of its use. That dovetails with this topic because t...

Revised vowel system:
However, words with a consonant immediately followed by <ru>, such as Grut, maintain the uvulars in front of /ʉ/. Thus, ['ɢᴿut] becomes ['ɢᴿʉt].

Is /[χ]/ more naturally an allophone of /x/ or /h/? Currently, the relationship is /[x→χ]/ adjacent to /ɑ ⱺ/ regardless of syllable coda/mora or another uvular in the same syllable.

The working vowel system is below noting my indecision on the mid front vowel's transcription and that having the mid back rounded vowel (/o̞ ⱺ/; last is non-standard but used) felt strange with three unrounded vowels. front back Close i Mid e̞ ᴇ ɤ̞ Open ɑ

Okay. I may end up with a four (/i e̞ u ɑ/ or /i e̞ o̞ ɑ/) or five (/i e̞ u o̞ ɑ/) system. If there's a four vowel system, is /u>o̞/ or /o̞>u/ more likely?

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
Aren't you spending a lot of time obsessing about sound change if it's for an RP setting? Or for any sort of setting, really. It's not really my business but if you're feeling pressed for time (which is almost always the case if you're creating languages for a purpose other than the simple fun of i...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea
Undine is apparently pronounced to rhyme with "mean", not "mine". I don't think I will change my pronunciation, but I haven't said the word out loud in 20 years and probably won't within the next 20. Ah, that's news to me as well. Words ending in "-ine" have fairly unpredictable pronunciations (e.g...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
I've decided to leave /ʍ/ alone. I'm rushed at this point because my collaborator went behind my back and scheduled one RP a year, with the one the languages are for planned for next year. Thus, I only have six-and-a-half months to get the basics down. Hells, I'd be much further along at this point ...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
According to Wikipedia, /ʍ→f/, while unattested, is quite possible (cf. /w→p/). As it stands, /ʍ/ is their only approximate because /l/ merged into /w/ and /j/ fortited to /ʝ/ before devoicing to /ç/.

Afwia is the current spelling of Alfia following /ɑ/ merging into /ɔ/ (later changed back to /ɑ/) and /l/ merging into /w/. Is ['ɑf.fwa] or ['ɑf.w:a] a more natural outcome, considering the new geminiation rule?

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
Languages spoken on Altrunia, such as Common and Sphinx, coalesced into Altrunian around 100 years after the planet was unified. Sometime before Altrunians conquered Protewa, most of the voiced stops, affricates, and fricatives were devoiced (later to be respelled). Eventually, the religious figures...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
As I've stated before, Altrunians would have devoiced /b→p/, etc. Later on, they respelled the devoiced consonants. Would a /j→ʝ→ç/ progression make sense in this context? /j/ can't, merely, vanish offhand because it would necessitate insertion of /ʔ/ as they'd go out of their way to retain a histor...

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
The languages once barred gemination; instead, gemination will now be marked by what started as palatalization ([ik.nɑ'sʲɑ→ik.nɑ'ssɑ]) or an elided liquid ([ɰi'sol.tɑ→ɰi'so.ttɑ]).
While not gemination, the above conditions apply to /xʲ/, etc. as well ([in.tus'tr̥ʲɑ→in.tusʈ'ʈ͡ʂɑ]).

Re: Altrunian Conlang Scratchpad: Inventory questions
It might be able to under average circumstances, however, Outsider speakers would devoice it back to [pʲ] because the language's only voiced consonants are supposed to be /m n ɲ ŋ ʐ ʝ ɰ r/.Vijay wrote:Could it lenite into [fʲ] or something like that?
