Re: Creativity of the day

OMG MONEY Uh, right, a new banknote I finished while in Russia. Meant to be Soviet Union-style, so very basic. And, also like the Soviet ruble, practically worthless outside of the country of issue. I like the design but there's not much to it that would make me think of Soviet money, my immediate ...

Re: The dream thread

I dreamed last night I was at the office and the phone of one of my colleagues was broken and he was asking around how to fix it. Today I saw him at work (he's a shift worker so I don't see him often) and I asked him if he ever backs up his phone, he said "no, I never do that", I thought of telling ...

Re: Venting thread

The being ignored thing from the other thread... I absolutely hate it too and lately I'm being ignored so much it's driving me bonkers. I was so annoyed by one person ignoring me I bombarded him with text msgs, called him 3-4 times in the space of half an hour and then messaged him on FB, obviously ...

Is there an English term for these types of cakes (I assume they're considered cakes):

Re: English help needed

Is there a general thread on all things English? I'll ask here: dulcet late Middle English doucet, from Old French doucet, diminutive of doux, from Latin dulcis ‘sweet’. The Latin form influenced the modern spelling. Sooo, people used to write and say doucet and then suddenly someone decides to thro...

I'm surprised Sal didn't mention Dick or Mitt, OK neither was POTUS but still close enough and I'd imagine their names sound quite amusing to Britons.

Re: Venting thread

Not a rant, just a stupid story: I saw a missed call today from my swimming instructor and for whatever reason my brain thought it was my shrink (their names are nothing alike, nevermind that shrinks never call you unless you seek them first), so I called her back and immediately started blabbering ...

Re: Words you've learned recently

chit (plural chits)

— A child or babe; a young, small, or insignificant person or animal.
— A pert or sassy young person, especially a young woman.

When was the last time you heard that word used in the latter sense?

Amsterdam is pretty expensive. Like I don't think you're going to be able to afford anything. Including going to the toilet. And if you ask for (tap) water, Dutch people will start complaining that you, personally, are costing them out of house and home. that'll be €2, plz lol, sometimes you're soo...

In the past 200 years there were only few days when this miracle happened in Malta. Malta has experienced just seven snowfalls since 1858. Apparently no snow there, but occasional hailstorms which look like snow on the ground. This January a lot of the Greek islands including Crete saw snow, after ...

zrak doesn't mean anything to us but mlat has different connotations, the verb mlatim means to beat violently/to thrash like when someone's in a fit of rage, it's kind of a slang/low register word, hard to explain really.

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

I was watching some show and there were two Texan women, one of them said "yeller" and the other (her sister) corrected her several times saying emphatically "yellow", I've heard some Southerners also say "lellow" for "yellow", just how common are these deviations?!
