Re: Population numbers for languages

Greek speakers don't understand 'most' of Ancient Greek. There are certain things which are denoted with archaic words, por ejemplo, 'bakery' is αρτοποιείο from άρτον instead of ψωμί, wine labels use λευκός οίνος instead of άσπρο κρασί, similarly ζύθος for beer, shoe shops use υποδήματα instead of π...

The Lent celebrations that I know of around here are those: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavic_carnival

Otherwise I don't understand how you can celebrate something for 40 days.

I guess that's how Greek present perfect developed e.g. έχω διαβάσει? And it has influenced Macedonian имам четено vs. Bulgarian чел съм.

I guess some are too dumb and uneducated and can be excused for believing all the state propaganda, but I know Russians who strongly opposed Putin even voted for Zyuganov in the last elections not because they're communist sympathisers but against Putin, when Crimea was annexed these people suddenly...

Yeah, I started using Discord some months ago but I don't think many of the Skype contacts I have even know about it since it's still more of a platform for gamers.

Re: Venting thread

No religion of peace trucks have visited Poland or any of the Visegrad 4 countries, no safe/rape-free zones for women had to be created around Christmas in those countries. Putin's approval rating is in the excess of 80% and that's according to independent pollsters such as Levada. Evidently Russian...

The latest Skype rape-upgrade seems to have put off a lot of people judging by the amount of users I see online now, where did everybody migrate to?

Huh, I could also specify the exact locations of most of the speakers I've listened to but that wouldn't help me when I make half-valid sweeping generalisations.

Re: /ç/ vs. /x/ in German

Well, you can interpret it as you wish, it was just an example, another is [ˈmʏnχn̩] for Munich, another toponym is Kirchbichl [kxɪrχbɪχl]/[kxɪrxbɪxl] alternatively with [ɪɐ̯]. I should add though I'm mainly familiar with how Tiroleans speak and even when they speak Standard German the accent is ver...

From spending time in Austria, talking and listening to Austrians. When discussing recipes with the mother of my friend i said Essig with ç and she replied "ah, that's such a German pronunciation, we say ['ɛsɪk]"

Is "bint" ever used on its own? I've only seen it in combinations such as "daft bint", "posh bint" etc, do people say something like "I saw some bint on the bus stop... [whatever]"?!

Ты уверена ты не была с Хоппэром? По моему, это было бы интересно. Are you sure you didn't live (I don't quite know how to say this in English) with Hopper? In my opinion it could be interesting. That should be уверен/был, unless, D-g forbids, Imralu too now doesn't identify with [not assuming pron...

Austrian German doesn't have [ç], just stick to [x] and you're fine. Austrian German - best German.

But when I wrote the first time, they weren't yet :( You should (have) call(ed) them, that's what I do when I want an answer, SMS, email and stuff like that is too easy to ignore/forget and even if they don't speak English, s...

Re: Some questions about Dutch

Orsmaal-Gussenhoven dialect phonology I'm most curious about this bit: — /p, t, tʲ, k, kʲ, v, z/ may be affricated to [p͡ɸ, t͡s, t͡sʲ, k͡x, k͡xʲ, b͡v, d͡z]. Peters (2010) does not specify the environment(s) in which the affrication of /v/ and /z/ takes place. In case of stops, it occurs in pre-paus...

I didn't find an Albanian thread but I saw the language is often mentioned here so I'll ask: is there an explanation that can make this sound change look any less bizarre than it is!? LL, G The letters ⟨LL⟩ and ⟨G⟩ are realised as a voiced velar fricative [ɣ] (also found in Greek: γάλα [ˈɣala], 'mil...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

I still haven't figured out what pronunciation I want to use for "myiasis", although I'm leaning most towards /ˈmaɪ.əsɪs/ as my understanding is that the "yi" represents a Greek diphthong rather than separate vowels in hiatus. μυῖα would have been pronounced [myĵ.ja(:)] (no idea about the length of...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

Most recent word I got wrong was apoptosis . I assumed antepenultimate stress by analogy with words like apocalypse , apostrophe , and apocryphal when the correct models are medical terms like thrombosis and acidosis . When I first read the word I assumed penultimate but then I realised antepenulti...

Yeah, same here, especially regarding food. To me "Asian" implies East Asian be it Thai, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indonesian etc. Sure thing Indians are Asian but Indian food just doesn't fall in the 'Asian' category, less so Middle Eastern food and other things in general. On the other hand 'Orie...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread

For some reason I just can't imagine a long fricative or approximant followed by the same fricative/approximant, since it's basically a fricative that lasts for three times the usual length. I mean, of course I can imagine how it sounds , but the thought of hearing it in a conversation is about as ...
