I managed to make something a little like Khmer with some Burmese (and Thai/Lao) thrown in that I'm really happy with. thātva is the genitive form of ātva "pigment" < Memeyk urtubĕ < urtu "color" + bĕ (suffix denoting things received from an object or person)

all excellent questions, tom. thanks for taking the time to critique my work. i'll try to answer them all thoroughly. also, i've updated the OP with some changes i've made since i first read your response. word order is free, but tends towards VOS in independent phrases and SOV in subordinate phrase...
