Corriander and cilantro have quite different flavors. Corriander is pretty mild, but cilantro has a pungent, cuminy-lemony flavor.

I was whipping up something for dinner yesterday evening out of whatever I could find around the house (like normal) when I came up with a very good recipe. One of the best things I've tasted in quite a while. I had some orange roughy filets - a mild whitefish - and I thought I could do something wi...

Thanks for typing all that up, Tengado. That's bound to be very helpful to those who are interested in doing tonal conlangs or who are learning tonal natlangs.

I'll pitch in with a link to a very good reference source for tone and autosegmental analysis.

What would you want to specify for timing, specifically? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isochrony Surely there are conlangs that have contrastive syllable or mora timing - having both long vowels and double vowels but with differing ablaut patterns or tone sandhi, for example. Maybe not. Anyway, yeah...

English also has no direct translation of German "nervig" or "genervt". If a thing is nervig , it is steppping on your nerves — genervt is the state you are in then. Irritated? Agitated? Nervous? It's something like "annoying", but stronger. In French we have equivalents : C'est énervant = It's rea...

I've never seen a 10,000 GF note before. When I was there in 1990 the largest note was 5,000 GF which would buy you a trip in a bush taxi from Gueckedou to Conakry - about 500 miles.

The exchange rate was about $1.00 / 1,000 GF.

Vowel Harmony: HARMONY, DOMINANCE AND CONTROL by ERIC BAKOVIC http://roa.rutgers.edu/files/360-1199/roa-360-bakovic-1.pdf In this dissertation I argue for a general model of assimilation within Optimality Theory, with vowel harmony processes serving as a specific empirical testing ground. Capsaicin is an oil. Just about anything oily should dilute it and lessen the burning sensation. Milk works because it's a colloid of proteins and oils, the higher the fat the better. Ice cream is milk on steroids, plus it's cold. I wonder how well various cooking oils might work. After diluting the...
