I was whipping up something for dinner yesterday evening out of whatever I could find around the house (like normal) when I came up with a very good recipe. One of the best things I've tasted in quite a while. I had some orange roughy filets - a mild whitefish - and I thought I could do something wi...

Thanks for typing all that up, Tengado. That's bound to be very helpful to those who are interested in doing tonal conlangs or who are learning tonal natlangs.
I'll pitch in with a link to a very good reference source for tone and autosegmental analysis.

Maybe not. Anyway, yeah...

"Published pictures show the world champion [Spanish basketball team] dressed in Olympic kit standing on a basketball court marked with a Chinese dragon. All the players are pulling the skin back at the side of their eyes. "I want to ...

English also has no direct translation of German "nervig" or "genervt". If a thing is nervig , it is steppping on your nerves — genervt is the state you are in then. Irritated? Agitated? Nervous? It's something like "annoying", but stronger. In French we have equivalents : C'est énervant = It's rea...

Vowel Harmony: HARMONY, DOMINANCE AND CONTROL by ERIC BAKOVIC http://roa.rutgers.edu/files/360-1199/roa-360-bakovic-1.pdf In this dissertation I argue for a general model of assimilation within Optimality Theory, with vowel harmony processes serving as a specific empirical testing ground. The model ...

Capsaicin is an oil. Just about anything oily should dilute it and lessen the burning sensation. Milk works because it's a colloid of proteins and oils, the higher the fat the better. Ice cream is milk on steroids, plus it's cold. I wonder how well various cooking oils might work. After diluting the...
