Re: ZBB member photos, part 5. (travel plans. nobody cares.)

The smile is part of myself, I can't get rid of it. I'd welcome advice on Smiling 101 but it would need to be IRL or via webcam. I dunno, I kind of suspect it's not Part of Yourself but it's a Smile For The Camera smile. That's why it doesn't reach your eyes. (we've ALL seen such as Sears family ph...

aight, for Ishtol: 1. Absence of any phonemic POA for stops further back than velar [half mark for only one stop-POA behind velar, or for prominent allophonic stops behind velar] phonemic /ʔ/ . 2. Phonemic voicing [half mark if voicing is only part of the distinction] the ONLY consonant distinguishe...

Re: Privacy and modesty in world cultures

It's entirely conceivable that, given cramped cities and tiny apartments, your Terps might get so used to little one-room apartments that even when they HAVE more space, they still opt for a larger open-plan arrangement. This might run into problems with modesty in a culture USED to having private r...

wait, what? so column is what, /k@l@m?/ [note: schwa is a placeholder for vowels, since I can't tell english vowels apart, and they all sound like schwa to me anyway] In RP, /ˈkɒləm/; in GA, /ˈkɑːləm/; in my dialect, /ˈkaləm/ > [ˈkʰäːɤ̯ə̃(ː)m] - so yeah. Plus, the fake photo grin often just looks... unsettling. For me, if someone catches me during an actual smile/laugh, the result is nice, but if I smile for the camera... let's just say there's a reason most of those pics end up in the bin. yeah totally ... sometimes it looks like the person with t...

Re: Spanish phonological observation

[D] is a killer allophone though. Once you get your tongue to do it, it's like there's no going back. Half the time I use it in English and in French nearly all the time, making me sound like a Spanish francophone. And then there's using it in German and Serbian where it makes no sense...yet I can'...

Since I brought up the idea, say you had the opportunity to found your own nation and it was accepted as a sovereign nation by the country in which you currently live. However, the catch is that it would never be any larger than 120 acres with three hundred people and you are not allowed to return ...

Wow, I forgot about the scene in The Maltese Falcon where the P.I.s are discussing how some now-dead gangster liked his moll to strap on a dildo and peg him - Bogie was nonchalantly explaining how an autopsy revealed that the guy's asshole had been lubed up. Then all the characters went undercover ...

Need to get a tape recorder. By the time I got to the shower, all of it but like three or four scenes were gone. W...
