Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

For years I used to pronounce a certain sports brand to rhyme with "bike".

The chrems can't agree whose flag to use, probably. And whenever they try to design a completely new one, there's always someone, isn't there, who points out that the new flag looks a bit like either 1) his own flag, or 2) his rivals'. Thus, stalemate.

May I recommend this translation? It's, er, a little inaccurate (because the translators are obsessed with cheeseburgers), but it has a certain cute style.

India Construction Kit

I've got my ICK paperback copy as a Christmas present (Happy holidays, everyone!), and I've nearly read it through except for the Tamil language section. Congratulations to zomp for another excellent book!

PS Am I really the first to comment on ICK here?

Re: Pop music genres - help?

As a side observation, I've got the early Blues Gospel singer Blind Willie Johnson in my collection. When I listened to some of his stuff ("God moves on the water", "John the Revelator", "If I had my way I'd tear the building down") I realised I'd discovered the origin of rap!

I admire your holding on to the HTML4 look—the Metaverse remains a bastion of original web aesthetics that otherwise are almost completely gone. Very nice way of saying it looks old-fashioned. :) Most web pages now seem to be optimized for ad delivery rather than for readers. At least I can worry m...

Re: New Almeopedia

It works fine on Firefox on my Mac. I will have to download Firefox on the PC to see if there's any difference. There should be an error console on Firefox— on my machine it's Tools > Web Developer > Debugger. If it gives you a specific error message, that would be helpful. I don't know how NoScrip...

Re: A quick intro to Classical Music

I find it interesting that you have some very harsh things to say about 20th century "artistic" music, yet your illustrations post on the period is longer than any of your other posts. I agree with the very harsh things you said, though. There's an old joke about an "avant-garde" music concert, in ...

P.S. In the case of 2. let the suppressed myths bubble up again during the dark years, ready for the radical sects to brandish at the priests.

I've heard that the Spanish epic the Cid is written from a lexicon of just 500 words. If accurate, that's enough for a fast-paced and exciting plot

Yay!

It does strike me that the stories of the "conquered Caďin maintaining their faith against horrific oppression" must have some basis in fact. We'd be talking about minority sects, some of whom would flee to the free states, bringing the stories with them.

Re: Confusing headlines and other trips down the garden path

There was a book published some time in the 80s (Book of Mistakes) which had a whole chapter of garden path headlines. Examples:

"Strip club shock: Magistrates may act on indecent shows."
"Hotel burns down: 150 guests escape half glad."

Re: Predict the future of your dialect

Some politicians like Ed Miliband, will realise what is happening and panic. But the ones low on the Dunning-Kruger scale, like Cameron, Osbourne, IDS and the Blairites, will probably never know. Some will be able to get around it, because they actually have a personality. One unfortunate side effec...

I like this system. If I've understood, "pirip" is emotional-logical-positive, and "ŋizij" is abstract-material-emotional-negative. Have you got meanings for those words?

Owing to our well-known love-hate relationship with the French, both languages will end up exchanging 90% of the lexicon. The two resulting languages will be even less mutually intelligible than they started. Corporate-speak will be recognised as an entirely new language. In 20 years time, max, it wi...
