Re: Affix combination in polysynthetic langs

Wow, those allomorphs can be even more non-intuitive than I thought. Mithun's "Languages of Native North America" either doesn't highlight how crazy they get, or I missed the examples.

Re: Affix combination in polysynthetic langs

Thanks CatDoom, that exactly what I needed. It was feeling like I was making some sort of kitchensink-newb-lang because of the craziness of the rules, but that really is the only way to explain these changes, and they really are that non-intuitive.

Affix combination in polysynthetic langs

So, looking at Navajo, Koyukon, and similarly complex polysythetic langs, a lot of the affixes combine together in crazy ways. You might have any number of changes, from metathesis to suppletion. It looks like you sort of have to define some morphophonological rules (like metathesis), but in other p...

Very cool, but won't work. When you hold your fingers stuff to hit the thumb button, your other fingers will activate the other buttons.

Re: Which grammar would you like to see most?

I think I understand you then, Izo. There are lots of things that are close, almost like what you want, but not EXACTLY what you want. Like, I'd really like to see a complete list of ALL PIE roots, but there will never be such a thing (and don't get me started on Pokorny).

Re: Which grammar would you like to see most?

I'm not necessarily opposed to getting a Cherokee or Lakhota grammar online - I just haven't found one. I haven't found a Finnish grammar online, either. I'm also looking for something fairly detailed - those 400 page type monsters, as opposed to the 100 pg. grammar summaries.

Re: Which grammar would you like to see most?

Oh, and I would see grammars of some Tolkienan tongues. Sindarin, Khuzdul and Adûnaic would be awesome. As it would be Westron, specially the Hobbit dialects of the North Farthing, Buckland and the Bree Land. And a Grammar of Primitve Elvish - Old Sindarin - Sindarin would be kickass. You mean, thi...

Taalen was inspired by Old Irish, Cherokee, and Lakhota grammatically, and by Cherokee, Finnish, and Qenya phonetically.

Re: Revamping Calara

My conworld is basically set in a world with something like thales, except on land instead of in the sea. The people live in the trees, with occasional foraging/hunting below. I haven't had any problem coming up with culture / civilization. Is it the sea that makes it difficult? I'm not sure how tho...

I can have those both for you within the week, as long as you don't need extremely detailed lists. I'll use the PIE textbook again (since it's a good summary), so look at the Tocharian info above to see if that's good enough for what you need, and I'll get on it.

Celestine, I'm sorry to say that trying to post the details on Proto-Celtic to Irish is an immense task. Celtic studies (my Masters) is complex, dense, and still essentially an old boys' network of classic philology. In addition to general dense and obscure writing that most texts contain, the sound...
