I'm sure all the old members recall that eurocentricism business.

Ahem.

Two Catalan speakers joining on the same day?? I assume you know each other, or that's one scary coincedence. Anyway, Benvingut a ZBB!

Just a quick basic query: my textbook says you can use either en or el for the masculine personal article. However, other internet sources I've checked only seem to use en (l'). Is the usage of el correct?

About the translation exercises: After I post the text to translate in the thread youse have one week to do the translation. The last day youse can post your translations, and the next week we comment them. Ulp... I'm gonna have to exclude myself from them for a while then, I've still got many long...

OK, I've just ordered TY Catalan off Amazon. One thing that I forgot to ask: already learning both French and Spanish at school, I've obviously got the advantage of their similiar vocabulary and grammar. However, could there also be a disadvantage of confusing myself by learning 3 Romance languages...

I'm hoping to buy TY Catalan (with CD recordings) and this cheap dictionary within the next week or so. Apart from that, all I can find on Amazon is Colloquial Catalan , which only has cassette recordings and is more expensive, a more expensive dictionary , and a very large and dear grammar that I ...

Izo, have you got any good translation exercises for when we get proficient? The only thing I can find (and it is quite good) is the Catalan Wikipedia. If someone tells me (s)he feels prepared to translate texts from Catalan to English or vice versa, I'll be glad to post texts (or sentences if yous...

I was suprised to see there's a TY Catalan, but that's not really what I'm after. Actually, I own 35 titles in the Teach Yourself series, and without a doubt, the TY Catalan by Alan Yates is far more sophisticated, well-organized, comprehensive, and linguistically oriented than any other TY book I'...

If you're worried about what language to use in Barcelona, you can use Spanish if you want or you feel more comfortable with it, no problem. As I said, the natives will understand you. On the other hand, if you use Catalan you will demonstrate to the natives (this is, we) that Anglophones are also ...

Bugger, this is coming thick and fast. I've got a lot of reading to do.

BTW Izo, does Catalan have truly equal status and is as widely spoken as Spanish in Barcelona? Do most of the population speak both?

Very good work anyway.

I've heard him speak Portuguese before, too, which I found more esthetically pleasing than either Spanish or French. I suppose once you start in on the Romance languages, they kind of domino after the first one or two. I love the sound of both French and Portuguese. And you're quite right about the...

Ah, OK. For some reason I kept reading it as both Meme and Iliatal as meaning 'Maiden'. I should really have looked it up first, but there you go.

Sorry for bothering,

A Possible Mistake

Possible, because I'm a little confused.

On the ?nomai page, you've got both Meme and Iliatal down as "in Fr?lina, the maiden". Is this a mistake, or have I misread this, and Fr?lina is the maiden? Because I find it ambiguous.

If I've messed up, sorry for bothering you.

For a Newcomer to Almea

Embarrasingly, I must admit I haven't read much of VV. In fact, the stuff I have read was such a long time I might as well have read none of it. So... for me, and anyone else who's a relative newcomer to Almea, in what order should I read the pages? What's best to start with and what should I leave ...
