Re: Kobashti?
The /h/ seems to appear only in these particular locational verbs. My issue with listing it is that it never actually appears as an -h-; it always assimilates. Anyways, I've been working on the lexicon, especially scalar verbs (a subset of static verbs used instead of adjectives). They each have the...

Re: Kobashti?
That does answer my main question. There is also the question about how to list the parts. For souva, e.g., are the parts so- and hva? or soh- and va? or what?

Re: Kobashti?
Now I have some specific questions. First: The 4 oblique cases -te, -va, -mi, and -se are derived from verbs. They also appear with some non-personal pronoun roots prefixed (all CV). In these, there's an /h/ of unknown origin between the pronoun and the verb. /h/ assimilates to some following conson...

Kobashti?
I've been working on something that might or might not be called Kobashti (project named Jun04). The syntax is mostly developed although not well documented. It needs a conculture, before I can add good examples. The phonology and morphology are far enough along to ask for comments; I'm concerned ab...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
Melissa Frazier takes another approach: she uses modern phonological theories to explain the Schindler classification. Her thesis is nigh unreadable for me, as I lack the phonological basis to understand it, so I can't judge this writing in its value: http://roa.rutgers.edu/files/819-0406/819-FRAZI...

Why is that? I think he had a point about the current standard paradigms not matching the data.KathAveara wrote:Yeah, I've seen that. I'm not convinced his conclusions are worth much.

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
Has anyone seen Kiparsky's "Compositional vs. Paradigmatic Approaches to Accent and Ablaut."? It's at

One of his conclusions is that the proterokinetic type doesn't exist.

Re: Non-Tolkienian fantasy
I read mainly SF, but one fantasy novel that comes to mind is Tam Lin by Pamela Dean. It takes place at a college in the 1970's, despite the main plot being taken from a Scottish ballad. It's definitely un-Tolkienian.

Re: The Miniature Conlangs Thread
Here's yet another idea. This is probably not very clear .... For each argument of the verb, the verb's argument structure class specifies the possible genders as well as the semantic role. There are 4 genders: animate, inanimate, location, and cause. Each noun has an implicit gender (excluding caus...

Re: The Miniature Conlangs Thread
I don't remember seeing this particular variation before. In Jan13 , a clause may have more than one predicate, for example, an action predicate and a result predicate. The tense (past, present, or future) may be marked on any predicate, the choice determining the aspect. If marked on an action pred...

Re: The Miniature Conlangs Thread
Jan03 is oriented toward changes of state and the entities that undergo the change. Because of this, resultatives usually are the main predicate, with the action causing the result being secondary. There are 2 main classes with regard to argument structure: univalent, whose argument is an unmarked p...

You have an apparent error in your 1st post. In the independent row and long o column, it looks like you've repeated the long i instead.

Re: The Miniature Conlangs Thread
I was thinking about making one of my conlangs get rid of prepositional phrases completely. What I was thinking of having take over the function of preposition is a series of locational verbs and relative clauses. Thoughts? Questions? I've used variations of that idea for several conlangs. What I a...

The idea is to create a (sketch of a) language or protolanguage using only these 9 phonemes (before any sound changes). < p t k > - MOA not specified < n > - POA not specified < h > - but possibly some oral friction < r > - voiced uvular fricative or approximant < j w > - < e > - vowel, such as schwa

It seems that my Naisek grammatical notes weren't as good as I thought! Incidently, wof him xalmem Piyanum should have been hipe xalmepe Piyampe using the instrumental case for the inanimate agent instead of "from" + genitive.

Re: What PIE apparently used gender for
I can't answer the question, but the list seems incomplete to me.
BTW in -is and -os, does the s represent the nominative singular ending (marking gender) or is it part of the stem? If the latter, then the list probably isn't reliable.
