Re: Arka: an a priori conlang with 14,000 words from Japan
I don't buy it. Try having a discussion in a noisy environment, or over a poor telephone connection - most of the words might be misheard or mangled, but a significant portion of the conversation is still understood. soo? I don't follow Lexicons are important, but not 95% important. There's more to...

Re: Arka: an a priori conlang with 14,000 words from Japan
(And conversely, we don't care as much about lexicon.) Wait, we don't? We should! Lexicography and semantics are part of linguistics too after all. Yes, but he kind of claimed lexicography was everything, and grammar (which he seemed to reduce to morphology) was nothing. Not everything, but a huge ...

I rarely turn violent, though I've fisted my fair share of walls and light switches over the years ... oh, me too... though firing guns really takes most of the agression out of your system. When I can, I walk away. A need for nicotine is always a good excuse.
When I can't ... I'll either turn hyper-professional and calm, or I'll turn sarcastic.

Re: Creativity of the day
It's too confusing. It seems to be a story about one person, but then it seems to be about different people, but then it seems to be about the first person, but then about the fifth person, but then the first person again, and I couldn't read it properly. It's very pretty though. This is a valid, a...

Thank you both! All glory, however, goes to the Gimp - specifically Filters > Animation > Spinning Globe. Works best if your starting map is big, with a width double that of the height. What did you use to create the original map? Free drawn or a generator? Free-drawn on Gimp, from original hand-dr...

For my conworld, Kalieda ... Do the people live on Earth, or on another planet? If the latter, what is the astronomical environment of the planet (moons, seasons, etc.). How does the timekeeping system handle annual variation in the length of a day? (Since Earth's orbit is nearly circular, we can af...

Someone please remind me to vote for this thread in next December's awards thingy. Superb work from everyone who's contributed, but most especially Whimemsz.

Re: The 2011 ZBB Awards: Discussion and Nominations
There is no hard requirement that something have been produced or published this year. It's sorta a custom, and ideally we should focus more on new work than on old things we've all known about for a long time. But there has never been a hard rule about it and never should be, for the good reasons ...

Re: Your longest conlang text.
Rik, what is the significance of the periods within words in Gevey? Also, is "SIMA" a gloss for "simultaneous?" My only resource is the Wikipedia page on glosses , and it's not listed. The periods in the IPA mark syllable boundaries (important for writing the language in its native alphabet). Gevey...

Oh. If we're posting poetry, then here's one I wrote recently that's the bastard child of sestina and noir fiction: (ahem) The Digger I was on the losing end of three hands of duff cards; each round a waste of good cash after better. The line of table chatter was stacking words towards my exit: the ...
