Re: Reversal of writing direction

It is surprising to me that no one has mentioned what I learned (who knows where?) in my childhood as one reason for writing direction reversal. What I remember from way, way, way back is: Especially with the advent of ink and paper/parchment/papyrus flat writing surfaces, the problem of a right-ha...

Re: Looking for critiques of my conlang's (tentative) phonol

Alright, I update my consonant and vowel charts to reflect the suggestions made to me. One other question I thought of is, how does one go about choosing a set of diphthongs, in a way that makes phonetic sense? http://i.imgur.com/1p30OFt.png http://i.imgur.com/wBkQ9Ne.png You can't go too far wrong...

Re: Looking for critiques of my conlang's (tentative) phonol

The phonological system is not bad, and I do like how the voiceless nasals and liquids make it seem less SAE. As far as orthography, I would personally switch <o> and <w> around as well as <q> and <x>, but I do like the system other than that.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

I have a protolang with an inventory of /a e i ə ɨ o u k kʰ ɠ ŋ t tʰ ɗ n p pʰ ɓ m h s r j w/ and syllable structure of (C)(J)V(C), where J is one of /r j w/. The only restriction on the syllables is that if the J slot is filled, the C slot in the onset can't be any of /r j w/. I want to derive a dau...

Re: Game: Let's Reform English

/ʔ/ is elided. pʰ tʰ kʰ θ :> f θ x s /kj tj/ merge into /c/. Vowel length and nasality are redistributed: Existing vowel length is lost. Existing nasal vowels denasalize and become long. Nasal consonants are lost in the coda and leave behind the new nasalized vowels. [wai˦˨ tʊ˦˨ wi˦˨ ə˧ tə˧ k’o˦˨ ʌ...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

I would expect the elision to be blocked in situations like that, but the answer is yes. Initial clusters starting with /s/ got an /e/ before it in Western Romance.

Re: Game: Let's Reform English

Retroactively correct syllable-final consonants that should have changed but didn't. The tones space out more. /w/ elides after a rounded vowel and /j/ elides after a front vowel; both make the preceding vowel long. The low vowels lose their backness distinction and both /æ ɑ/ become /a/ (length an...

Standard Average You

Have you noticed that there are certain features (not necessarily SAE) that you end up sticking in your conlangs a lot? Here are mine: The consonant inventory often ends up using one of these two as a basis: One inspired by ancient Greek, with tenuis, aspirated, voiced, and nasal obstruents at three...

Voiceless word-final fricatives debuccalize to /h/. Voiced word-final fricatives become approximants of the same place of articulation. The stress accent is lost. Words not marked as being pronounced with a high tone are now explicitly marked as being pronounced as a low tone. [wɛː˨ dʊ˨ wiː˨ həʋ˨ t...
