Re: Kool map game
I decided to make a list of all the presidents of Kluk. A presidential term lasts 3.5 years, and a president may hold office for a maximum of 3.5 successive terms (12 years, 3 months). Theoretically, a single person may become president 3.5 times, non-successively (meaning the maximum possible lengt...

Some history: 36180 Due to the growing popularity of Kluk's Umur Island as a tourist destination because of its climate and beautiful beaches and volcanoes, the Umur Tourism Promotion Act is passed by then-president Gilligan Island. Philadelphia, and especially Pittsburgh, the capital of Umur Segmen...

Here is Detroit, and Canfora (Aurora Rossa Federation Colony)
I haven't labelled the cities in Canfora in the slim hope that someone will have that information.

Does anyone have copies of those newspaper pages that Izambri did? He's removed all his stuff from this thread, but there was information in those (like the name of the capital city of Canfora) that I would like to have. I have no idea how to contact Izambri anymore.

Re: Test your vocab knowledge in a foreign language
It's possible then. I wouldn't be surprised if, like you said, these words exist in a Malayalam dictionary, but that no one actually ever bothers to use them, and that they just code-switch to English because the Malayalam words are cumbersome or don't come to mind right away. I frequently do the sa...

Re: Test your vocab knowledge in a foreign language
I think even my parents remember eating that way, directly on the floor with no chairs. It was definitely a common way to eat during their childhood. Maybe it still is for some people at least (maybe even a lot of people). We can test another way. The thing about code switching is that you can swit...

Re: Test your vocab knowledge in a foreign language
I wouldn't expect lower-class people who weren't specifically drivers to necessarily understand these terms, though, since they're not necessarily relevant in their lives. We can test another way. The thing about code switching is that you can switch to any other language based on the knowledge of ...

Those islands are one of my favourite parts of this.
If you want to contribute again, one thing you could do is fill in the topography of this map. Or, if you're not big into graphics stuff, make a rough map with some city names and placements and so on, and I can fill it in.

Re: Ainu grammars
I tried a quick search on Google in Japanese, and most results seem to point to this book. The publisher's website lists it at 416 pages, and it looks like it's fairly in-depth. Unfortunately, it's very expensive and, of course, written in Japanese.

Re: Test your vocab knowledge in a foreign language
Another thing is, if these words are generally expected to be understood by people not fluent in the source language, then they are probably loanwords. Like, if I talk to you about how both samurai and sumo wrestlers wear fundoshi, you will perhaps be confused by "fundoshi" but not samurai or sumo. ...

Re: Test your vocab knowledge in a foreign language
Yeah, but just because those are established words, does that necessarily mean they have become part of the language for good? I mean, what are the criteria for distinguishing between lexical adoption and code-switching? I meant to edit my post, not quote it...oh well. I would say that if it's a si...

Re: Test your vocab knowledge in a foreign language
Who drives the cars? Lower-class people? If so, surely they have words for the tools of their trade. Also, Wikipedia has an article on ക്ലച്ച്, (clutch), so I think we can say that it's a real Malayalam word borrowed from English and not just code-switching. Also, messing around with Google transla...

Re: Test your vocab knowledge in a foreign language
vijay, no words for any of them? Not even seat? And wouldn't that mean that the language does have those words, but that they're just borrowed from English? Japanese: 1. ハンドル handoru the handle. This one bugs me a bit. 2. 速度計 sokudokei 3. 鍵 kagi ? (evidently this can also just be イグニッションキー igunissho...

I don't think that map gets hot enough in the hottest parts, so I will have to fix that up a bit.
