Re: Quirks in conlangs/natlangs

The Algonquian person hierarchy is an interesting quirk. In Cheyenne, it manifests thus: 2nd 1st 3rd 4th Inanimate person Whether a verb prefix marks subject or object depends on which person is higher up on the ladder; 2nd person prefixes are always subjects; inanimate person prefixes are always o...

And Pharazon, you complained when you took up Italian after I took Catalan (which I'll do next), and now you got a request for it! :P That's because the difference between Italian and Latin, phonologically, is about the same as that between Mississippi and Alabama English. Addressing the topic of this revived thread, I think Mark should advertise Almea by dropping flyers from buildings during parades, adding inserts to urinals that say "ZOMPIST.COM", releasing a mix CD of today's best [sic] pop hits "brought to you by ZOMPIST.COM", etc.

So around 2001, 2002.

That predates what I did by a few months.

Date of Elkaril

When did you start working on it, Zomp?

I just now gave the grammar a decent look, and I noticed that an awful lot of it is eerily similar to a conlang I did in the past. I'd just like to know who got to what first. :D

The biggest influence is the fact that people want to see stuff. I'm insane enough to have posted the LCK and Virtual Verduria before knowing that anyone would actually read them, but without people expressing an interest, I would have done much less. You can't perform without an audience. (Also, b...

Are the embolded "t"s seperate phonemes, like retroflexes, or are you slyly trying to give us info about some upcoming work? In fact they are retroflexes... Old Skourene had a set of dental and a set of retroflex stops, fricatives, and liquids. I rock. Could you do me a favor, Zomp, and say "Spacey...

Re: Effect of the Board on Almea

I think it comes as a given that all of us here who conworld/conlang been influenced by Zomp's methods of conworlding and presentation (maybe not in imitation) to some degree. But I wonder about the effect the other way. What kind of effect do you think the board has had on Almea? Quite a lot of ma...

Interesting reflections... we really need some access to ktuvok skins to experiment on. Some fishes (I think I'm recalling this correctly) have skins so tough that a surprising amount of force is needed to puncture them-- they resist even a sharp scalpel. That's partly what I had in mind, I think. ...

Interesting question. But I must agree (as much as possible) with tha Zomp. They would be smart to have a skin tough enough to resist the most frequently used weapons. But then again, what is more penetrating (searching for an answer on the real question)? I'm pretty sure a knife is much more penet...

Thick skin

The skin of their chest and back is thick and heavy enough to resist a knife or arrow (though not a spear or sword). This struck me as being kind of odd, because of the mechanics involved. A stab from a knife tends to have more penetrating power than even a bullet (they can tear through many kevlar...

Earth's axial tilt is one of the many very lucky factors that have made Earth habitable and condusive to intelligent life.
