By an unfortunate accident of sound change, the Nyipa word for "dog" is porn, cognate to Ntaratu korun of the same meaning.

Re: Just how exactly do Semitic tri-consonantal roots work?

Also, I have seen at least one triconsonantal conlang from someone who wants to "show how it's done" which turned out to just be an uninteresting and uncannily-derivative semiticlone which didn't exploit the concept beyond what is attested in the one family. That's the same kind of empiricism-gone-...

CьjV is realized as a noticeable lengthening of the palatalized consonant with an off-glide. The j is quite clearly heard.

Re: Existence of [tʃwV] and [tɕjV]

You can analyze Japanese either as having a series of palatalized consonants or syllable-initial Cj clusters. In the first case <ch> is the phonetic realization of /tʲ/, in the second case it is an allophone of t before j or i. In both cases the affrication is incidental, and the dominant feature is...

Re: Existence of [tʃwV] and [tɕjV]

In my opinion, the presence or absence of a yod between tɕ and another vowel is merely stylistic in phonetic transliteration and represents the same sound, for example, : Here's Mandarin [t͡ɕi̯a] from Forvo: http://forvo.com/search/掐/ And Japanese [t͡ɕa]: http://forvo.com/search/茶/ The two words ar...

Re: The "particles conlang"

Qiangic languages are conventionally transcribed as contrasting /a A/, but I haven't seen any vowel diagrams, so I'd bet that just comes from some linguist somewhere in China not picking up on the unwritten knowledge that nobody uses { and a the way IPA intends. Consider that technically, <a> can b...

There are all of the ways and attempting to reduce this to some set of equivalences between surface structures is a good way to not get anywhere. I.e., it is not a good idea to think of this in terms of "alternatives to prepositions", because the class of meanings English expresses with prepositions...

Re: Whence aspirated stops and nasal vowels?

By the way, the aspiration of voiceless stops after nasals has the motivation of increasing the salience of the voiceless stop. In Bantu languages, presumably to increase differentiation from sequences of nasals and voiced stops.
