Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election

So, out of curiosity, when will the vote on the investiture of the government take place? The news say on March 14th. On that day, the Bundestag will vote for a Chancellor (Angie, of course), who will afterwards propose the cabinet ministers to the President. So there's only a formal vote on the Ch...

Re: Classical Composers

Looking forward to see who the other four 3rd-tier composers are. In general, my favourites are baroque composers (Bach, Händel, Vivaldi) and Russian Romantics (Tchaikovsky, Mussorgksky, Borodin). But my listening to Classical music has very much been based on random encounters - hearing a piece, ge...

I don't think that the laryngeals need to parallel any other series. The three different outcomes of the syllabic larnygeals (and of the combination of syllabic resonants + laryngeal) in Greek and the colouring effects on adjecent vowels show that there were three, but I don't think we need to assum...

On the other hand, it may be that the Šrdš fared like the Franks in Gaul, or the Turkic Bulgars on the Balkan - they conquered the land, gave it their name, but lost their language. Well, as a minimum at least once - presumably, the didn't speak a Romance language before the Romans conquered them (...

Also, IIRC, the oldest layer of Greek loan words in Latin came from the Doric dialects spoken in the Italian Greek colonies, where the Ionic change /a:/ > /e:/ hadn't taken place.

In a pinch, the SPD has always chosen "being responsible" over insisting on their program and vision, starting with voting for the war loans in 1914. It always ended badly for them, but they never learn.

Similar. Up to some point in my twenties, I spent hours on conlanging or making up conhistories. That doesn't mean that a CDU/CSU-SPD coalition is certain, though. Once the coalition talks have produced a formal coalition agreement, there'll still be a vote about that among the entire SPD membership.
