Re: A near-open back vowel? ɔ̞ or ɔɒ
I just don't treat anything as set in stone until I have at least 5 pages' worth of material. And it's not automatic then either. Actually I just don't treat a whole lot as set in stone.

Re: Aktionsart, Telicity and Durativity
Perhaps getting rid of those five categories is better and to simply use [±telic] [±durative] [±dynamic] since it seems there can be a great deal of context-based variance. Indeed. It's like how "aorist" means past-perfective. It doesn't always. In fact outside of certain uses in Ancient Greek (and...

Re: Triconstanantal Root Language Families
Does anyone have any good sources on tri-constanantal root language families? The concept of such a language is rather cool, but I'm rather confused by how they would be affected by sound changes and how a plausible language family would look. I understand that I can do something like look at hebre...

I write from the perspective of (say) a terrestrial researcher who can wander Almea. So technology not available to the non-iliu races can't presently be used. The Almeans don't do any archeology, except accidentally (e.g. wandering the surface of known ruins, finding a Cadhinorian pot in your subc...

Re: Slang For Penis In Europe
When I posted here responding to Astraios, it was in exasperation at the latest example of this; the primary place has been in the Conlang Fluency thread. I know there have been several people who are not myself who have been discouraged from posting more in there because so much of it is Astraios,...

Oh shut the fuck up. If it comes to that, straight people are like that all the time . They get to announce loudly and bluntly that they're a fan of tits without people telling them off for it. So behavior not-here is an excuse for behavior here...coolstorybro. When I posted here responding to Astr...

Are you a one-trick pony? Because that's how you come across. What, I have to be interesting to you? No, you don't. Duh, it's not like he made the thread. Also, how seriously can you argue a 10k post person is monothematic? Well, I am. But for good reasons. Penises are quite important, you know. I ...

Re: On the order of the loss of personal verbal inflections
in English the 3rd person singular is the only one (outside of be ) with any distinctive marking (in the present, at least). According to this http://typo.uni-konstanz.de/rara/nav/browse.php?number=34 that is extremely rare, with English as the only given example. http://typo.uni-konstanz.de/archiv...

I feel like I understand better now how this stuff with the IPA creating symbols and using them to communicate sounds works. ^_^ I was under the mistaken impression that it was objective and more or less perfect because it's such a widely agreed-on authority and has been for years, but instead it s...

I'm behind a lot of things technological. I've not even touched an iphone or ipad. My nephew looked at my phone the other day and said "It has such a small screen, it doesn't look like a real phone." Yes, thank you. I remember the days when phones bigger than mine were called "bricks". Remember the...

Re: On the order of the loss of personal verbal inflections
Example: in Spanish, the 3rd person singular is the least marked (yes I am aware that it is not fully unmarked in all tenses or conjugations), yet in English the 3rd person singular is the only one (outside of be) with any distinctive marking (in the present, at least).

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Seems unlikely being that there are no other velarized consonants in the inventory. Also, the presence of /kɬ/ (for all intents and purposes, a coarticulated alveolar-velar lateral affricate) might suggest that a sequence /xɬ/ existed at some point. Later becoming /ɬʟ̥͓/... Or some other batshitter...

All of that is balanced out by the fact that it's the only language family in the world to out-Semitic Semitic.

Iau. "Whoah, look how many different tones are used in natlangs! I think I'm going to put them all into one language! Also, more than one tone can be on a vowel. Whatever that means. Hmm... not kitchen-sinky enough; let's add nasalization, but *only* put it on /a/, so it's not phonemic. Hmm, still ...
