Re: Vocative kinship terms and titles

To add to the Mandarin: teachers are given surname + 老师 (teacher), possibly with the title 教授 (professor) as appropriate in a university setting. I also am not so sure on religious leaders, but that leads me to an entirely different thread I will create.

Re: A Podcast about Conlangs

Just so I can have people up to date, we ended up deciding not to record this week. But no fear, we are already preparing to record two episodes next week to start up a buffer, so we can avoid scheduling hiccups affecting the release of the show. Also, Torco has been downgraded to an occasional gues...

Re: A Podcast about Conlangs

The music was mine -- and I really think you should have just cropped it, faded in at the middle, then faded out. It'd be alright with me :P EDIT: is there an easy way to download the podcast? I could maybe shorten the music down a little. The main issue is I want to get to the hook before I fade o...

Oops. I curse a lot, I guess. It sounds a bit like we're just fooling around and George tries to keep it serious xD Ah, it's supposed to be fun. I just try to steer the discussion where it gets sidetracked. Besides, I need you guys: You have much better radio voices than me. That said -- watch the ...

Re: A Podcast about Conlangs

Oh, is that on there? Meh, I've seen more professional podcasts call specific attention to drinking, your references didn't bother me. I do think I got rid of all Torco's F-bombs (like, four of them). We need to save those for a profanity episode down the line :)

Re: A Podcast about Conlangs

Yeah, some Jazz might do well. The main thing I want is for it to get to the hook quick and have a quick, difinitive ending. I have a theme in the first pod, but it's a little long for my taste. Something shorter and quicker would do nicely going forward. By the way, Episode One is up: http://conlan...

Re: Poetry?

I am thinking that Terpish poetry will focus on patterns of tone and vowel length (more accurately syllable weight) rather than rhyme schemes like English poetry does. The poem might have a particular melody of high and low tones repeated in each line or stanza or else sequences of short and long s...

Re: A Podcast about Conlangs

I'm happy to "call in" or contribute content, but regular hosting... it sounds like too much of a Chore, and I need a bit of a break from that at the moment (as a reward for finishing my undergraduate studies). Funny, I actually decided to start the podcast for something to do after graduati...

Wow, this is coming together pretty fast. One thing I may need is some intro and outro music. If there's anyone out there musically inclined that would like to contribute, send me a PM.

Re: Instead of definiteness

As for the east Asian classifiers, I don't see how they're connected to definiteness. So if "a cat" becomes "creature cat", how would you say "the cat"? As I said, you can also use demonstratives too, i.e. in Vietnamese it would be "creature cat this" or "creature cat that". This is similar to Chin...

Are these "pitches" similar to what the same intonation pattern would be in English, or are they different? I presume there would be differences, as even within English there is some variation (uptalk anyone?)

Actually, if you read the Wiki article, those plasma lamps can actually be pretty fucking dangerous. For example, they can interfere with the touch pad on your lap top, or cause a tiny burn on your finger if you hold it in just the right place for long enough. In other words: long "Potential Hazard...

Yes, those "real" quotes are good. I hope they are genuine, but you can never trust anything you read on the internet. BTW, did you know Hillary Clinton is pregnant with quadruplets? :-):-D I'm inclined to believe the courtroom ones are true. They seem to fall into two categories that are very plau...

Nonsense can be grammatically correct. Yes, thank you Chomsky. Damn -- I can't fit this in my sig: Edit: fixed "biblial" to "bilabial". For some reason, I've always read it as "biblial". Thanks, TomHChappell. "Biblial" to me would be the sound you make when you close a large book for dramatic effec...

Do you have what it takes to read this? Blogger liveblogs own vasectomy. I got the intro to that in my reader. Not going to read the actual operation, though. BTW, they do vasectomies with the patient awake? Thinking about it, it makes some sense -- that bit of the anatomy is probably easy to targe...

Come to West Virginia. Here, some dialects have three distincions: you (singular), y'all (small group), and all y'all (large group/everyone within earshot). You're from West Virginia? What part? I have connections there, but they're mostly in you'uns or standard usage territory, and take as much fr...

English is very poor in pronouns. "I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they"... There should be a plural "you". In many dialects, there is. If you were learning American English, you could pick up "y'all". Just a note: I'm far from representative, but I don't think I've ever actually heard anybody say "y...
