Re: Native American survival scenario
The loch-lock merger doesn't occur in Scots (maybe not even in Northern English, not sure), but it occurs in all Traatɥŋ varieties except for the one in the Scottish Caribbean. Northern English varieties mostly lack the phoneme /x/, changing it into /f/ or zero like in more Southerly varieties. Cit...

Re: Native American survival scenario
This is a very promising premise, and is going in an interesting direction. One little nitpick however: Scottish Caribbean dialect, spoken in the Lesser Antilles. This variety is unique in that it has no native speakers - it is acquired by Scots-speaking white children as they grow up. The Scottish ...

On Brexit, You're talking 2-4% out for the polls just prior to the referendum. But previous polls were giving Leave victories quite often. And the four-way national polls gave Clinton a single percentage point too many. I'm not sure what the margin of errors on those polls are though. In any case, b...

Lol.
I first read the following:
Stephen Hawking, Given Two Years to Live in 1963, Is Going To Space Over 50 Years Later
as being about time travel. It wasn't until I actually read the article that I realised it wasn't Hawking travelling back to the year 1963.

Re: Venting thread
I'm voting Macron, personally. I don't particularly like the guy, but I don't have much of a choice. It's obvious that Le Pen will win the first round, the only question is who is going to be second. I dread to see Fillon vs Le Pen on the second round: I'd be forced to vote for Fillon, and I really...

It's extremely democratic. It's true that there are regular fair and free elections in the EU, which can not be said for other supranational organisations. On the other hand, the current constitution was decided without referendum (except in Ireland, where it was originally opposed and then revoted...

Unfortunately, he did quite well, gaining four seats. He didn't do as well as predicted, but it's still not that good. Being left securely in the opposition is probably also to his liking. Actually getting into coalition governments and receiving the responsibilities that come with it is seldom goo...

I still urge for the PhD because that's what you actually want to do with your life. Also, even you're after a large paycheck and whatever, the PhD is still an investment in that direction because I think uni professors are better payed than high school teachers.

I understand others would have problems with the unfamiliar syntax, but despite the unfamiliarity of the syntax, the main difficulty of the statement for me is that I don't know who 'Palestine Queen' or 'Gigi' are. Apparently, they refer to one and the same person, Gigi Hadid.

Personally, I find it's distance combined with time that helps. I'd rather not go into the details of ancient history, but other people in similar situations have forgiven less easy than I have with the distance and time. Maybe more than two years though.

https://www.google.com/search?q=syllabification+phonetic&hl=de#safe=off&hl=de&tbm=bks&q=%22phonetic+syllabification%22 Syllabification seems to be like accentuation: both have phonetic and even acoustic realisation and can be realised differently depending on the language. Also, they can both cause...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
I agree on the split and Kath's analysis. AFAICT, syllabification exists phonetically but the way it's done varies from language to another. Gaelic and Australian languages notably prefer VC syllables to the much more common CV ones.

Exactly! There is innovative music around, it just isn't Western pop music. It seems that globalisation, instead of opening people's minds, has shut them into a small generic pop bubble.

I just realised I had more spelling pronounciations and the like than I thought:

diminutive /dɪmɪnjɪtɪv/

^ I had to say that out loud to get it. A friend of mine asked me if I could check a translation she's done from German (her L3) to English (her L2) that is going to go on the website of where she's doing an internship. In return, she'll buy me lunch. I figured it would be mostly just fixing up odd...

@Sal: Thanks for the info and song links. A huge part of how music sounds is down to instrumentation. Take a classical piece and play it with a mediaeval ensemble (shawms, crumhorns, tabors etc) and it'll sound mediaeval. Or mediaeval(ish), at least. Contariwise, when I was watching this year's Screenwipe, it took me a moment to realise th...

Re: Random Thread
If we are limiting ourselves to the most popular (well-liked, or rather well-bought) anglophone popular (non-folk, non-classical) music, then yes music from the past few years and decades is worse IMO. And Autotune, along with the music industry, has contributed to the idea that people very poor at ...

That's interesting. Perhaps just use the normal velarisation and pharyngealisation marks? If it is pharyngealisation in codas.
