Re: Venting thread
At least one of my students said he hadn't even noticed because he'd been indoors in the office all week, so I guess it could be worse. I've mainly noticed because I've not been able to cycle for almost two weeks. It's not all bad, really, after writing that I have been lounging around reading my ne...

Re: Venting thread
I'm goddamn sick of the weather too. We just had two days without rain, but I had to work. I was looking forward to having today off and going outside, then I woke up to more rain - and yet the weather forecast had said it might rain for a bit . It's fucking useless if it doesn't correctly predict t...

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
I graduated uniiversity in May and, since September,...

Re: Phonemes which are found in <5 languages or so
θ̪ *snorts with stifled laughter* But seriously yeah Phoible is fairly useless in several respects: another problem I find is how it sticks to the traditional IPA chart so rigidly that it leaves things like ejectives, aspirated consonants and affricaes out of the main table in a separate list which...

Re: Many people apparently think there's a [g] sound in "ng"
Where it becomes a problem is actually for /n/ and /m/ at the end of words in English, as the Japanese coda-/n/ (ん) is underspecified for POA and actually sounds like [ɴ] or [ŋ] a lot of the time. Isn't it common to pronounce /Vɴ/ as vowels with nasal offglides, not unlike French «in un an on» or P...

Re: Many people apparently think there's a [g] sound in "ng"
It's transcribed into Japanese as /ng/ (or /ngu/ at the end of words  ) - at least for English, but not for Chinese and Korean. It's one pronunciation "error" the Japanese make that I've never really bothered correcting in lessons, as it doesn't impact their English much, and they might even h...

Re: Venting thread
Rhetorical question: Why do people (usually cis straight males) have to make victims of others in order to qualify things as bad (like calling things they don't like or things of bad quality "gay" or "lame") I'm not the kind of person who refuses to reply to rhetorical questions. As a non-native sp...

There isn't even any such thing as "Asian food" in Asia Aber wahrscheinlich gibt es dort "westliches essen" :). But probably there's "western food" there :). まあ、そうだね。洋食っていう hah, i guess so. in japanese, "youshoku" 反対は和食。中国料理とかは、こんなシステムどこに探されるのかな the opposite is 'washoku', japanese food. i've no ide...

Oh i hate that... I'm not allowed ibuprofen because of a stomach thing I had in my teens (it'd probably be OK but there's no way i'm risking it), but paracetamol/acetoaminophen* is not strong enough usually :| (I've been prescribed ibuprofen a few times by doctors but they have to give me a stomach ...

Have it ready next time, like just respond with ひどーいな or something The staircase wit thing reminds me of this morning - I was woken up by a woman at my door selling stuff (at 10:something, so I probably should have been up anyway lol), and she'd already launched into her spiel for about 20 seconds b...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Malayalam Also, what do people without FOOT-STRUT distinction have in such borrowed words as curry ? Do they just not talk about these things? ... well, it's a STRUT vowel, so those without a FOOT-STRUT distinction just use /ʊ/, which is their vowel for both. Don't ask it to make sense, it's been a...

My pharmacist has, up until tonight, been great. Tonight, however, she discovered that I did not know the word 償還払い ("reimbursement"). This prompted her to tell another pharmacist "of course, she's a foreigner so she doesn't understand Japanese," look up and write down the English words for the sym...

I assume anyone who's actually interested has far since grubbed up my ISP and specific location; because, after all, this is all Techie-Land now. Oh, I'm not very Techie, I wouldn't even know how to do that if I wanted. And it would be stalkerish, wouldn't it? I don't think this is the kind of foru...
