Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

So I'm taking an "advanced phonetics and phonology" course and we have two textbooks. One of them is "The Sounds of Language" by Elizabeth Zsiga and this book is REALLY bad. Almost every example has one or more(!!) blatant transcription errors. I can't believe I paid for this shit.

Blust, Robert: The Austronesian Languages, Revised Edition (2013) Proto-Polynesian to Luangiua h > 0 q > 0 r > l f > h k > ʔ t > k n > ŋ w > v (the resultant consonant inventory is a little strange: /p k ʔ m ŋ l v s h/) It also seems that ʔ was lost word initially but this could possibly be an arti...

Re: Word Initial Glottal Stop v. Zero

That hypothesis strikes me as not so productive, because if we assume that all so-called utterance initial vowels really do have a glottal stop in front of them, it becomes a lot more difficult to explain languages which develop word initial consonants like /h, j, w, ŋ/ out of apparently nothing. p...

I've studied Spanish on and off since I was in the single digits, for school reasons and also for people I was friends with, but I still am not really fluent in it at all.

I'm not objecting to the claim of silent letters, I'm objecting to the claim that it sounds like syllables are missing and that this phenomenon is any more markedly present than in any proper european language.

Re: Bizarre Sound Changes

The Mizo sound change has a nice comparison with the set of changes that happened in several northern Athabaskan languages. The set of phonemes *s *tsʰ *ts' *z *ts shifted to *θ *tθʰ *tθ' *ð *tθ and then went kind of wacky from there. Dogrib has them as xʷ kʷʰ kʷʼ w kʷ and Hare has them as f f ʔw w ...

Well, maybe the people should stop pretending that reading the spoilers is a serious business and start enjoying the works regardless of whether they know the ending or not. Or am I mistaken and an unexpected ending is everything a good work has to offer? Don't be so stupid, there are planes of exi...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio

I managed to find a book a while back about the phonological history of the southern Ryukyuan languages (i.e. those not including Okinawan and its closest relatives) but after looking through it a few times I have come to the conclusion that it is completely indecipherable. The author uses an idiosy...

Re: Correlation between language features and location of or

I once saw a documentary on TV about the San, and they have a story that the language they speak contains so many clicks because if they speak with each other during the hunt, the sound it makes is more "natural" than speaking without clicks, and hence doesn't scare away the animals. JAL I've heard...
