Re: Venting thread
I'm gettin' reeeeeeeal tired of my project lead's tendency to blame us for everything (while never, ever taking responsibility for his own errors), condescending attitude, and insistence on his way or the highway. A coworker on a different project has been urging me to talk to my manager to get assi...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
A lot of conlang.org sites were down for awhile. According to the mailing list, it was a problem with Dreamhost that has since been resolved.

Sounds fun! My sister and I had a little party that was just us (and my mom's chickens) and really enjoyed it. About 77% for us. I was worried it wouldn't be cool, but it VERY MUCH WAS.

Just shelves to me. If somebody was putting books in it, I guess bookshelves or bookcase, but if they're putting food in it, then I think the proper term is why???

Re: What do you call this?
First word into my head, before I read anything you said, was cabinet . Then I thought of pantry (I typically think of pantry as a specific room/closet, but if this thing was in a kitchen and food was stored in it, I could still call it a pantry--my parents' house is like this, and their cabinetry l...

Does that lid screw on and off? I don't think so, but I'm pretty sure it's used for pickling vegetables (or maybe eggs), not for cooking. I agree with Imralu that I'd be inclined to call it a "pot"; IMD a pot doesn't have to be for cooking. For example, a pot is also what you put a plant in. That's...

Fairly dickish, I'd say. "I'm giving you a gift that I know you don't like! Due to social traditions and pressure to be polite, you'll have to go through the motions to accept it, even though we all know you don't want it and we all know I know you don't want it!" If the offer was to make a chocolat...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
This all reminds me that on the radio this morning, the hosts were having an argument over the pronunciation of Sasquatch that I'm pretty sure was really about how advanced their NCVS was; the one guy seemed to have a farther back vowel in the first syllable than the others. Sometime I should take a...

I think [eə] and [ɛə] are pretty common in American English for /æ/. Before nasals these are ubiquitous in NA...

Is COT the same as LOT? If so, has CAUGHT the same quality as LOT and only different length? In case of "I'll", isn't that the diphthongue being monophthongized to the starting point? (In which case I think you can't really say it's COT.) JAL Whoops, haha, yes, I meant LOT. (which is indeed my "cot...

That's awesome! I'm currently having similar feelings about Morrowind; I like games, but I just haven't cared that much about them lately, which I regretted... until I started playing Morrowind. (and now I can't stop!) With videogames, for me at least, the feeling of actually experiencing whatever-i...

Huh. I've never noticed it before, but I do more-or-less have COT in I'll.
I have COT in "solid", though; I don't have the COT-CAUGHT merger.

The new Wintersun album is out. (no, it's still not Time II, calm yourself, it's called The Forest Seasons and is loosely inspired by Vivaldi's Four Seasons) It's... fine, I guess? I like it well enough. Spring 's probably my favorite, although I need to listen to it another dozen times before I can...

I've recently started playing Morrowind! I've played Oblivion and Skyrim (and read more Elder Scrolls lore than is probably healthy... ask me about subgradient sometime if you want a sixteen hour monologue), but always figured Morrowind was "too old" for me. Yeah, well, with the help of the unoffici...

Hmm. I've actually always pronounced "whilst" with /ɪ/.
Then again, in my version of American English, it's seen as archaic and... whimsical, I guess, so the "actual" pronunciation isn't necessarily relevant.

Truthfully, I've never said it aloud, and I'm not sure I've heard it pronounced either. I'm inclined to guess something like /tɐɹˈpɒlɪn/, but I don't know if that's "correct" or not.
