Wow, your description of banh mi seems even more restrictive than the definition. My initial hypothesis would be that (at least some) Vietnamese Americans heavily specialised. My impression is that they're more a West Coast thing. Over here, they're known for being cheap ($4 or so) insofar as they'...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
An interesting thing about the Tocharian reflex is that only the places of articulation metathesized -- PToch. käntwo must be from pre-PToch. *ǵn̥dʰwéh₂- (rather than **ǵʰn̥dwéh₂-), since PIE *d becomes either PToch. *ts or zero. The initial of lingua is a Latin-specific innovation -- it's absent in...

@Nort: I think the only Vietnamese food I'm familiar with are nems. As far as I can tell, 'banh mi' refers to either 'bread' or sandwich and is not particularly Vietnamese to start with. I've never heard of nems, but it sounds like they're the same thing as spring rolls, which are maybe the same th...

A common image of American cuisine abroad is the association with fast food joints like McDonalds and KFC. Sure, and over here the only image anyone has of Vietnamese food is pho and banh mi. A couple years since they finished building a new hotel across from my bus stop and a restaurant has finally moved in. A chicken fingers restaurant . I've tried to pay attention to Jordan Peterson and somehow never manage to find the part where he says anything, but that Macleans article would get thrown out as too over the top if some scriptwriter tabled the idea of putting it in Idiocracy.

IIRC, Kusunda has height harmony [and uvular consonants condition the low set], but functional load is low and there's a lot of free variation.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Palatals became apical postalveolar in Mandarin, and Slavic has apical postalveolars as outcomes of palatalizing sound changes. Aren't true retroflexes very rare outside Dravidian? And do they ever contrast with apical postalveolars? A voiceless velar lateral fricative is attested in a few languages...
