Re: Careful Speech

Speaking of numbers, here's another good example: 20 [̍tʰwʌni]. But in careful speech I'll say something closer to [ˈtʰwɛnti]. (And this despite the fact that my speech is pin-pen merged.) leaving aside the vowel (the twenny-twunny thing is another whole deal on its own), this is an example of medi...

Re: Idiolectal pronunciations

@Kereb: huh? [olfækʈʂɻi] for me. [olfæktəɻi] sounds overdone and jaunty. whether or not one elides that schwa is not the salient part of my comment; it was about whether it's a schwa or an "o" sound: I pronounce the "o" in the "-tory" ending since it's not a schwa here . SC was talking about the wa...

Re: "big" versus "large"

What about this?: 23 17 17 is the bigger number, but 23 is the larger number. Do you natives agree with that above? No. I can't untangle this whole big/large issue for you but i can tell you that in this particular case the overlap between "big" and "large" in the usage i'm accustomed to is total. ...

Re: Idiolectal pronunciations

Is it at all common to have an idiolectal pronunciation of a word not in accordance with any dialect? among users of this board? oh my no. we had one user who proudly told us how he pronounced both the m and n in "column", another who invented an entire accent of his own to speak his native swedish...

why can't Harriet and Duncan do like Chinese expats do and just be "Harriet" and "Duncan" in places that can handle those names, and pick completely unrelated names to use among the confused barbarians?

it definitely exists. when someone says they "believe in a flat tax" they aren't saying they think that such a concept really is out there, they're saying they themselves support it.

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread

Yeah I saw that one too. I thought the grounds on which Sal dismissed the large number of noun-verb pairs distinguished only by stress was silly. As Zompist says, it's bringing syntax in to a place where it just doesn't seem to apply (one other case in which this was used to dismiss the phonemic sta...

Re: Cheese that smells

Well, the "already" automatically triggers a subordinate clause, and the whole run from "already" to "Bale" has no garden path possibility, I think? confusion arises because "already" doesn't necessarily trigger a subordinate clause here. remember this is Headline Register, in which dropped copulas...
