Re: Most beautiful/ugliest languages
I would say Finnish, Italian, and Japanese are the most beautiful to me. I find Afrikaans the ugliest language, though, and dislike southern American English as well (though obviously it does not count as its own language).

Re: The Official ZBB Quote Thread
Mario soundtracks and pepperoni pizza aren't "propaganda" you fucktard. The pizza came from some Christian fundamentalist business (or some right wing presidential candidate) and buying it directly supports them. The soundtrack is something of an outlier compared to all the unabashed country music ...

No. Don't apologize for telling Eddy to fuck himself. They asked what I disliked and I said it. I refuse to feel bad for responding to this question. @Esmelthien: Don't take it too personally. I do not particularly dislike Dutch, although it does sound kind of silly to me. Now Afrikaans, on other h...

Some things that I find unappealing to varying degrees: — Uvular and pharyngeal consonants — Schwas and other centralized vowels — Too many fricatives and diphthongs — Nasal and maybe front rounded vowels — Southern dialects of American English — Non-rhotic dialects of English — Dutch and especially...

I begin to worry when #35 is Nevaeh which, besides looking difficult to both say and spell, looks like someone was an idiot and couldn't spell Nevada. Also it's heaven backwards, what's next, Susej? You can't tell me that's not worrisome. Well if nothing else, I also share your concerns. This combi...

Re: Conlangery Podcast (Latest Ep: #68: Agglutination)
The podcast raises some good points regarding the length of affixes and the resulting sense of naturalism. I would speculate, though, that the appropriate length for affixes depends on the phonology of the language as well. Japanese features many affixes with two syllables like - masu and - sase[ru]...

Re: Diachronics of clicks?
I have read that many words in Xhosa and Zulu acquired clicks out of avoidance speech practices. Speakers got around bans on particular words by distorting them in various ways, often by replacing consonants with clicks. These altered words would often replace the unmodified word altogether, leading...

today, I worked on revising my conworld (current version has many geogrpahical/tectonic flaws). Took it to my dad, who's a wealthy/experienced geologist. We examined and worked on it for a couple of hours. Best one on one time in ages :) Cool. Didn't realize geology could be a lucrative field either.

Indeed, I have always wanted to read a grammar of Bella Coola (or Nuxálk as I believe they prefer to call it now).
