Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

Me three. I always have allergies, and they're worse at some times than at other times, but I don't recall them ever being that bad. My sense of smell is often shitty, though (because my nose is stuffed - but again, there are stuffed noses and then there are stuffed noses). Linguoboy, this may be a ...

Never thought about it that way, thanks! I was thinking it would make sense because, well, feet are the lowest part of your body.

Re: Population numbers for languages

Huh, that's odd. Now I don't see anything about 37 million. It does however say "27,300,000 (2015)" for me. Maybe I misread that 27 as 37? Interesting, it sounds like you have access to a more updated edition of Ethnologue than I do. :) The estimate I cited was from 2001. :P I don't know to what ex...

Pe jos

AFAIK, in Romanian, the equivalent for 'on foot' is pe jos . This always confuses me because pe means 'on', but jos does NOT mean 'foot' but rather 'down' or 'low'! Apparently, pe jos can also mean something like 'on the floor' at least in some contexts. Are there any other languages that use an exp...

Re: Population numbers for languages

I suspect they've pulled that number from Ethnologue, where it says that all varieties of Minnan together are spoken by 37 million people in mainland China . Wait a minute, doesn't Ethnologue say that 25.7 million people speak Minnan in China (I presume this means mainland China)? Or is that outdat...

Re: Population numbers for languages

OK, on second thought, 80 million is probably way off. See below for brainstorming that led me to this conclusion :P But when I click on to the page about Yuehai, it says only 13 million. :? I know, but it comes with a question mark, and that estimate is from 1998, whereas the other one is from 2009...

Re: Population numbers for languages

The Cantonese spoken in Hong Kong is not identical to the prestigious standard spoken in Guangzhou. However, the Yuehai dialects including Guangzhou dialect are apparently mutually intelligible. This says there are about 80 million speakers of all the Yuehai dialects combined, including Guangzhou di...

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread

A conversation at work today reminded me that the euphemistic term for a corpse in Malayalam is the English phrase dead body . The other term for a corpse is the Sanskrit loanword [ɕəˈʋəm], which nowadays is apparently considered crude. So instead of asking "[ɕəˈʋəm en̪d̪iˈjeː]?" 'where is the corps...

Re: Languages without Quantifier Hopping?

I think something similar might be true of Malayalam, too, but I should probably test the 'not' part at least on my dad, and I need different sentences because I'll be damned if I have any clue how to talk about conlanging in Malayalam. :P Maybe something more like "in the field, the landlord doesn'...
