Re: French Creoles

Agreed. I found this website http://creoles.free.fr/articles/tipamchm.htm in the third paragraph they show a bit of the rules for "r" and nazalisation. About the variety of French spoken, I think since cities of the western coast of France were the one that mainly traded slaves (please correct me if...

Re: Protolang Reconstruction Challenge (Akana)

+1. That would be cooler than "proto-T1." I have a (probably stupid) question about the Cednitit language. How do you know the word for one, "ot" was at some point pronounced like something like [otʰ], if I understand the instructions given it should be pronounced like [oʔ]? Are we sure the glottal ...

Re: Looking for short texts in various extinct languages

Since I'm a chauvinist French, here is the "Chanson de Roland", in old French. https://www.hs-augsburg.de/~harsch/gallica/Chronologie/11siecle/Roland/rol_ch01.html I found this in for Hittite, the website has some texts: http://www.utexas.edu/cola/centers/lrc/eieol/hitol-0-X.html I have not found an...

Re: Diaeresis in English ortography

The author should have worked more on the matter and less on diaeresis. To me, this article is rubbish: his facts are wrong.

Though I didn't know about the ë in English, I will sleep less stupid tonight. :)

Re: French Creoles

Thank you for opening this thread. With the "r" to "w" story, I don't think I understand it either. Here is want I guess: I would guess, word initialy, it becomes a "w". rouge -> wouj In a stress syllab, it becomes also "w". frère -> fwè But in an unstressed one, it disappears. grand-père -> konpè (...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread

Fixsme: The creole usage in the article seems suspect: I tried googling for French creole C and French Creole D and got two Swadesh lists: http://ielex.mpi.nl/language/French_Creole_C/ , http://ielex.mpi.nl/language/French_Creole_C/ but there's still hint as what distinguishes them and the forms ci...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread

-- Disclaimer: I do not have any degree in Linguistics neither in a language reconstruction. So I may not be aware of the last techniques. Sorry, this post is way too long. And Happy New Year -- About the Atkinson and Gray methodology and the Anatolian Hypothesis, I wanted to write a post saying tha...
