Re: Voynich manuscript

This made me wonder if there'd been any further "progress". Here's what I found: https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/1/16959454/voynich-manuscript-mystery-ai-decoded-debunked . Turns out the original "decipherment" was even more kludgy than I originally thought (and I thought it was plenty kludgy enough).

And while web search is far from a perfect technology, Google really does usually surface accurate, reliable information on the topics you search for. (Vox)

More interesting to me than the transitive use of surface is the choice of "web search" as the name of a particular type of technology.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread

Lockdown drills are for any emergency where evacuation would be inappropriate; an active shooter would definitely count as such as a situation. It is not specifically tailored to/meant for shootings though. We close the lights and windows, put black paper in front of door windows and all hide in th...

I think that the protests will be enough to keep the protocols from normalising it. In the meanwhile, protocols for shootings can help save lives. The protests are a relatively new thing. On the one hand, the training and preparation on the part of public services really helped reassure patrons and insure an efficient coordinated response. We should debrief with them and learn what we can do better to support them. (We we...

Active shooter hoax on campus today. Less than a week before exams.

On the good side, police didn't injure anyone in responding (sadly, not a given in these situations), our response was very well-coordinated, and we got the all-clear in a little over an hour.

Hmm, you mean an AdvP or something? Nearly isn't a preposition. Mmm, I'm bad in syntax :). I assumed a headless PP (if that's a thing), since "nearly every second" feels like a PP of time ("at nearly every second"), but I probably analyse it wrong. "At nearly every second" is unidiomatic IMD. This ...

Linguistic tidbit on 'bành mi': it appears to come from the French 'pain de mie' (white bread). So even the name comes from the colonial period. Popular etymology. Bánh [note tone; bành is a different word entirely, e.g. bành trướng "expand, spread") is attested before the colonial period as a Nôm ...
