Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to?
German: A little over halfway through Heinrich Böll's Gruppenbild mit Dame and still enjoying it immensely. I'd kind of sworn off WWII books, but his humour makes reading about that era much more tolerable. I also find the unconventional structure (i.e. a series of fictional interviews) very appeal...

Es ist immer noch ziemlich winzig. Dieses Mal waren wir nur vier. Ich glaub nicht, dass wir je mehr als ein halbes Dutzend zusammen bekommen haben, sogar wenn das Wetter am Schönsten war . It's always been pretty tiny. We had only four people there this time. I don't think we've ever had more than ...

Well, you can interpret it as you wish, it was just an example, another is [ˈmʏnχn̩] for Munich, another toponym is Kirchbichl [kxɪrχbɪχl]/[kxɪrxbɪxl] alternatively with [ɪɐ̯]. I should add though I'm mainly familiar with how Tiroleans speak and even when they speak Standard German the accent is ve...

On the traces of PS indefinite form: the -y -less form of passive participles ending in -ony is sometimes used in poetry when the author wants to make his work in old style, resembling Old Polish or some extinct, I think, or eastern dialect of Polish. In 18th / early 19th century Russian poetry the...

Re: Getting rid of grammatical features
One example of getting rid of definiteness is what happened in several modern Slavic languages, although it could be said that the definiteness distinction in question was only a marginal feature. Balto-Slavic had a definiteness distinction on the adjective, which was achieved by adding the PIE demo...

Re: Getting rid of grammatical features
Maybe an alternative to "the" gets more widely used - some English speakers will use "that" in preference to "the" - and then the work that "the" does becomes more and more marginal. "That" might take on the functions of "the" in marking definiteness, or it might not. Although in that case one migh...
