Re: Occurrence of spelling pronunciations
Here's an alternative theory: people say what they've heard. If the people around you say [ɔftn̩], you (may) say it too. (I don't rule out a spelling pronunciation, but we shouldn't resort to this explanation if "saying what other people say" covers it.) I'd still count it as a spelling pronounciat...

Re: More English vowels
no it hasn't -- there are strong verb ablaut patterns regular enough to be extended by analogy. there are even patterns that are *entirely* analogical in origin, e.g. 'dive', 'sneak', 'sit' Agree. I have a phonemic distinction between a long TRAP vowel (the BAD vowel) and a short TRAP vowel (the LA...

Re: Will singular "they" be as acceptable as "you" in formal
In some dialects, us appears in the first person singular but only in dative roles (e.g. Give us a kiss!), which I find really interesting because I don't know of any other morphological separation of direct and indirect objects in English. It's not only after "give" either.

I remember learning the word kiln in primary school. The school didn't have one, but at some point we made clay thingies that got sent to a kiln to be kilned in the kiln. It was kind of dumb because even though we were told to avoid air bubbles or thick parts, we were kids, so of course some people'...

Re: Odd natlang features thread
I'm actually not sure that's so odd. At least, I know anecdotally that some languages have specialized words for 'to eat'...like 'to eat (anything)' vs. 'to eat a meal', and this distinction is found across a pretty wide variety of languages, too. It's quite common also for sign languages to use di...

This winter has been really mild. There hasn't been any snow that has stayed apart from one day.

I'm curious about when y'all pronounce [ɱ]. I've realised for me it's an allophone of /n/ but never of /m/ ... I might even insert a slight [p] in between /m/ and /f/
