Re: A couple of quick terminology questions

on a tangent, one of morphologists' favourite examples is something like "sensationalisationalisationalise", which is technically permissible under the rules of english morphology, but people lose track of what the meaning's meant to be very quickly. Now see, this I don't get. If no one uses it bec...

Re: Conlang Relay

I guess we could start in about a week. There are 10 participants at the moment, so if no one else joins, the game should last until the end of June (since each person gets 4 days for the translation). If more people join, it could continue into July, but I don't think it is going to last longer th...

Re: Conlang Relay

I would! It'd be cool to work with someone else's polysynthetic project, and Tmaśareʔ has directional marking too which looks fun.

I still need to know what the approximate dates for the relay are, though, before I can commit.

Re: Translations and Glosses of Hamlet, Act 3 Scene 1?

Oh, I'm sure that lots of different translations have been done for the more major languages I mentioned--that's one reason I wanted to see which ones you guys recommended. Of the three you linked, which is your favorite? Divergences from the original are definitely not a problem--they're actually e...

Translations and Glosses of Hamlet, Act 3 Scene 1?

Next month, I'm going to be teaching a seminar on world languages to some gifted high schoolers in Mongolia. (The students are all advanced English speakers.) For one of our later discussions, I'd like to do a cross-linguistic comparison of translations of a single text. Since one of the other semin...

I usually just respond, "Why do painters paint?" Sometimes I have to clarify that I mean amateur painters, but it usually works well enough.

Re: Conlang Relay

I might be interested in participating, but I'd need to know the projected dates first. My school is weird and runs later than most, so if the relay runs during or close to my finals season I won't be able to join.

Re: Polyconglottal Telephone (proposal)

You are describing a conlang relay--they're quite feasible, and they happen all the time on the CONLANG list. In fact there's two going on right now. The first person composes a text, then sends it to the next player with a lexicon and sufficient grammar notes to decipher it. Next player translates ...

Quick question on development of Spanish gender

A friend has voiced some curiosity about the development of Spanish "noche" and "día" and how they fell into their respective genders. Could anybody point me in the right direction to find him an answer?

Whooa! Can it be? Perhaps, áa<ni>k-at? Delicious indeed! Note: Something appears to be backwards, so it's possible I misunderstood. I placed the áaknairuk in front of you , and the áaknaihda in front of me . Should I switch them? Also, I have a list of :D words going: Átx, nunúnapaxiin, fínapaxiin.....

Re: Inyauk Practice Thread

Well yes, but that's not really a problem. Once I internalize the grammar, I can acquire new vocab as it's needed. For concrete nouns it just takes a quick zarní , concrete adjectives are similarly simple, and for more abstract things, with enough concrete vocab I can set up conversations such that ...

I'm just riddling this out through the conversat...
