Re: Intelligibility between dialect and standard language

Speaking of Spanish accents, I find a similar pattern to what Travis has identified: I have no trouble with lack of distinción or yeísmo , both of which involve the merger of segments. But aspiration of /s/ presents more of a challenge and the hardest dialects of all are Caribbean dialects with wide...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

Last night, a friend repeatedly pronounced Thames [θeɪ̭mz] until another friend couldn't take it any more and corrected him. Even after that, he changed to [tʰæmz], presumably under the influence of the spelling. (Before anyone asks: He's from Indiana, not the Northeast, so he probably isn't being i...

I'm actually more likely to add a pause to:

What did you put on Saturday?

to make it clear on belongs to the phrasal verb and not the prepositional phrase.

My husband was an avid art collector. A few years before he died, he talked to someone from a local art museum about selling or donating some of his collection. She was very interested in his Japanese graphic art, but for some reason the museum didn't approve the acquisition. I've been struggling wi...

Wait, you mean there are people who actually call it parme[d͡ʒ]an? I've never heard that pronunciation. As Soap says, the most common alternative is with [z]. (Apparently this is the usual pronunciation in the UK.) I don't think it constitutes a "spelling pronunciation" unless it can be shown that ...

It was really shocking from a British perspective, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't deliberate hatefulness, merely a failure to grasp the full sectarian significance of the suggestion. I'm not so sure. Anti-Catholicism in the USA used to be vicious and it's not dead yet. My last year of Catholic grade...

And even though I do not actually recall hearing or saying Elijah , for some reason the default pronunciation that comes to mind is the hyperforeign one. Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

Do you mean it rhymes with delicious for you? That's exactly what I'm saying. So perhaps this represents another source of analogy (since salacious is not a word I use often--and I've even caught myself saying that with tonic /ɪ/ before). A lot of people have /ʒ/ for <j> in 'Beijing' and 'Azerbaija...

I don't know whether I say fallacious with stressed /ɪ/ by simple analogy with the noun or out of a historical desire to avoid homophony with fellatio.

Interesting. I would say that Americans are significantly more likely to have familiarity with Spanish than French, actually--who doesn't know greetings/how to count to ten in Spanish? I only learned a while ago that "courier" doesn't rhyme with "warrior". My family has always used /ə/ and Dad has a masters in animal science. (He wrote...
