Note also that Ancient Greek δέ can mean "and" or "but". This actually makes sense—the meaning of the sentence is often enough to tell you whether it is consistent with, or contrary to, the speaker's expectations.

Re: Romanization challenge thread
Helllang = Greek-derived language. This one is from the Boeotian dialect. [ç] is /hj/, sorry. I'm not sure if it'll be a separate phoneme yet honestly but I'll just write it as ψη or something if it is. The article is ta/to/tœ/tɛ. I was going to post my romanization but I got tired and went to sleep...

Re: Romanization challenge thread
A helllang I am working on. I have most of the orthography figured out, but I need a good way to write tone. /p t k pʰ tʰ kʰ/ /l m n r j w/ /s sʰ h [ç]/ +length, including initially /a e i ɔ u ɛ œ y/ /˨ ˦ ˩˧ ˨˦ ˥˧/ (i.e. 2 4 13 24 53 or thereabouts) Syllable structure is maximally CRVCs at least, bu...

Restoration
I recently found myself wondering: what language has restored the most features of its ancestor? For the purposes of this question I've left the exact definition vague, but in general I'm looking for e.g.: a phoneme, element of morphosyntax, or particular construction that was lost and then regained...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
If you were the type of person who uses "sissy" or "gay" as insults, would you care about people who are offended by these words? Yes, you might*. The whole idea of pointing such things out is to inform people that they may be inadvertently offend people, so they can choose to either change their l...

Re: Venting thread that embraces everyone without distinctio
Insults are supposed to be offensive, what's their purpose otherwise? Insults are not supposed to be offensive to someone else besides the one insulted. If I were to call you a "sissy" or acting "gay", some of the resident population might be offended (and rightly so). But this isn't even comparabl...

Can you please explain this concept of "ableist"? Discriminating against people with disabilities. Does that help at all? Sure, but what about Travis' post is doing that? He's calling you stupid for what I think is a perfectly reasonable, well, reason: that you are holding on to an idea that is inh...

I don't know if you mean this as a case, but, if so, it is usually referred to as a ' benefactive '. It's a strange case which I called Averbialis for lack of a better term. It's used whenever you want to attach a suffix to a noun which turns the whole thing into an adverbial phrase, such as -gad (...

gímaidu SIMPLICITY-Adv-FOR I don't know if you mean this as a case, but, if so, it is usually referred to as a ' benefactive '.
