Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
I pronounce dulce de leche "caramel," because I'm so confused and haven't even the vaguest clue what language it is or how it should be pronounced. :p I would pronounce it [ˈd̪ulse ðe ˈlet͡ʃe] (or maybe [ˈd̪ulse d̪e ˈlet͡ʃe]). If my parents mangled the pronunciation atrociously and often enough, I ...

Re: Relative clauses: cross-linguistic comparison
Those first two examples remind me of things like "I say so" vs. "says me." (I'm not sure to what extent the previous sentence makes sense to non-Americans. I hope it at least sort of makes sense to other Americans ).

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Your other words are too rare for me to honestly have a fixed pronunciation (I don't think I've ever encountered them, in fact), other than trying to follow italian pronunciation rules so far as I'm aware of them. Pretty much the same for me. I would pronounce zabaglione , mostaccioli , and paste e...

Re: Relative clauses: cross-linguistic comparison
Comrie seems to suggest that making subclauses of all four types is more problematic in sentences where there is more than one subordinate clause. From the end of his chapter on relative clauses (p. 160-162): "In section 7.3.1, we looked only at simplex sentences, and only at a single position at a ...

So forgive me if I'm not entirely sure she isn't just using a cheap emotional trick to try and stifle discussion. I'm not entirely sure either. But you know what? There are some things I'm willing to take the chance of being wrong about and some things I'm not. That is true for me, too. That is why...

I have been guilt-tripped so many times I just don't have patience for it anymore. Re: Confusing headlines and other trips down the garden path
Oh, I assumed it was a missing comma: "...#MeToo demonstrates pornography, causes women to be viewed as sexual objects, and contributes to the prevalence of sexual harassment." But upon reflection that doesn't make a lot of sense, and "demonstrates that pornography causes..." is a lot more sensible...

This. I was thrown off by "demonstrates pornography causes." I'm not sure I've ever seen 'that' being omitted in a Wikipedia article in any other context.Salmoneus wrote:Presumably it's a confusion caused by the non-standard grammar.

A sentence from the Wikipedia article on #MeToo:
Several groups of Christians, conservative women and radical feminists have argued that #MeToo demonstrates pornography causes women to be viewed as sexual objects and contributes to the prevalence of sexual harassment.
