Re: Confusing headlines and other trips down the garden path

What an odd response to my post. In what way? Seriously, be more constructive in your criticism. Very well, then, I'll elucidate: You seem to have interpreted my remark as some sort of... I dunno exactly. Some sort of political or social statement? It was not. When I said "What an odd news story", ...

Hey Viktor, that's a cool map. I'm having a hard time telling the difference between "Trade, transportation, utilities" and "Other services", though! For example, which is the dark areas in northern North Dakota?

Re: Lazarus, or on the determination of habitability

I think this overall is a really neat idea, and even though the new map has significantly more habitability, it's in really interesting shapes that I wouldn't have expected. The big north-south swipe on the eastern continent seems like an excellent place for some interesting cultural interactions be...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

Been peeved at work lately. A bit of background, followed by a giant rant (sorry): I work on a team of five. There's me, "Dan", "Cameron", "Nick", and "Kevin". Dan and Cameron have been on the project the longest; they started it and had a lot of impact on its direction. Nick has been on the project...

Closing various fisheries to set nets to protect dolphins encouraged I don't even know what's going on there. I'm going to guess... It is encouraged for various fisheries to limit/prevent/be closed to "set nets", and this will protect dolphins. (where a "set net" is a certain type of fishing net) T...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

Interesting. I would say that Americans are significantly more likely to have familiarity with Spanish than French, actually--who doesn't know greetings/how to count to ten in Spanish? Spanish speakers so vastly outnumber French speakers in the US, too. (then again, I'm biased. I have family living ...

I actively don't care what a restaurant calls itself, as long as the food is good. I'm not particularly fancy when it comes to food, I'm afraid. If it's tasty, I'm happy to eat it, and I enjoy eating from a variety of cuisines. If such a restaurant calls itself "fusion", neat-o. If it doesn't, that'...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread

The main difference for me between the two is that in "rat trap", I actually pronounce the /t/, while in "rat rap", it's just a glottal stop. (virtually all of my word-final /t/s are glottal stops, unless I'm really trying to emphasize it or something)

My immediate reaction is for it to rhyme with "write"--i.e., /ɐɪ/ or whatever. (I have the Northern Cities Vowel Shift so I don't know if that's what it is for people without the NCVS) But the whole point of the song is to pronounce the words with as many varied vowel sounds as you can come up with,...

I'm reading Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser, a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder (and her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane). It's much more likely the rental company has them, anyway. They clean out cars between renting them, so unless the papers were somewhere they might not have looked, they likely found them.
