It's made worse by pronouncing it as a native Portuguese word. I remember meeting an [udsɒ̃], and it took me a while to figure it out. I had the same problem once with a [vagiˈneχ]. I had to see it written before it made any sense. I'm going to go on an extreme guess and suggest that this is an ove...

I don't think d > ð > ʕ is too weird. In one of my langs I have *d > ʕ: *d lenites to *ð and then merges with *ɣ, which has an allophone of [ʕ] before back vowels; vowels then move around to make /ʕ/. I kinda find it weird that *t and *θ become pharyngeal(ized), though. What are the exact details y...

Is /d/ > /ð/ [ð̞ˤ] > /ʕ/ > vowel retraction plausible? Re: Strange accent I heard today
And I don't think using an unaspirated [p] is a big deal in English. I know plenty of Spanish that do. Except that to many English speakers, unaspirated onset (not intervocalic or final) [p] will very likely be heard as /b/, which will have unaspirated [p] as a very common allophone in that positio...
